With the success of The Third Man and Welles' performance as Harry Lime playing a major part of that success, it was unsurprising that the charismatic Lime was brought back in the form of a radio show. The amoral, reprehensible behavior of the Harry Lime of the film would be left behind for a far less villainous, but still roguish character heard in the radio series. The series debuted on August 3, 1951, with the episode "Too Many Crooks," and lasted for 51 further shows. If the series has a legacy, it would be as the breeding ground for Mr. Arkadin; the episode "Man of Mystery" gives us an early glimpse of that character, then known as Arkadian. Welles scripted a few, but not all episodes, and did not direct. The show was broadcast in the United States as The Lives of Harry Lime.
