:( I had the misfortune to listen to Carringer speak as invited guest during the Greg Toland Centenary at Charleston, Il. a few years ago. His talk involved a condescending attack on Welles's competence as director of CITIZEN KANE - everything good, of course, being the result of Toland!
He ended his presentation with a clip from a bad TV movie showing bored housewives falling asleep after watching CITIZEN KANE on TV during their weekly film night. His contempt for Welles was evident by his choice of this concluding clip.
Carringer did not allow any questions from the audience and left immediately after his grandstanding presentation. The organizer told me later that of all the people invited, he was the one who caused the most problems.
I'm mentioning this not just to illustrate the personality of someone who wrote the infantile essay "Oedipus in Indianapolis" but to draw a parallel with the many informed contributors to this sight, Jeff, Roger, Glenn, Tony, and others who, in my opinion, are much better scholars and far superior human beings!
