Correspondence Ejzenstejn-Welles

Postby Filmform » Sun Mar 04, 2012 2:47 am

I found an old interview to Orson Welles realized by Cahiers du Cinema (nr. 165 april 1965). In this occasion Welles mentions this correspondence with Ejzenstejn talking about “a letter of forty pages”. This letter was the reply to the Welles’s review of Ivan the terrible published in New York Post on May the 23th and the 25th, 1945.
In this way, I started my research on this correspondence.
Anybody has any idea about this mysterious literary relationship? Where can I find any documents or letters from or to Orson Welles?
Thanks to everybody for any kind of suggestion :!:

The Lilly Library has four boxes of letters in their Welles archive, including between Welles and Eisenstein. How many items there are I couldn't say, but you could call them and they might have more info.

Through Lilly Library, I found only one letter (I have it). This letter was sent by Ejzenstejn to Alex Korda. The soviet filmaker asked Korda to create the contact with Orson Welles. The big letter (the fourty pages's letter) seems does not exist. My question is. Why did Welles quote this letter to the Cahiers's journalist if this letter doesn't exist?

I think Welles said somewhere all his correspondence with Eisenstein was destroyed when his house burned up in Spain.
Would you care to share that letter you have?
