Considering what was ahead in 1941 . . . considering what is ahead in 2011, all of which would have been avoidable in both cases, little Charlie Kane's reaction is most apt.

What's ahead in 2011, Glenn?

Not to worry; let's just eat our Black-eyed peas and twelve grapes and hope for the best.

As Orson Welles, with his sense of consequences, might tell us: No nation can be so powerful, frivolous, greedy, and heedless as we have been over the last thirty years without paying a terrible price.

As the Witches say in MACBETH: "The charm's wound up!"

Let's do our best to weather what's coming, gang.
