Describing it as “basically Welles 101,” director Chuck Workman presented his recent documentary Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles for students at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. on March 9.

An Academy Award winner for the documentary short Precious Images, Workman screened Magician and talked to students as part in the college’s F.I.L.M. – or Forum on Image and Language in Motion – series.

“I hope that the underlying subtext is to see what a phenomenon Welles was, especially in movies,” Workman told the Utica Observer-Dispatch. “People wrongly think his career eclipsed in his 20s when he left Hollywood, but it didn’t. It got better and better.”

The documentary will arrive on home video on May 26. The single-disc Blu-ray is priced at $34.98 and the DVD at $24.98. Both are available for pre-order at amazon.com

In an interview with Wellesnet last fall, Workman discussed the making of Magician: The Astonishing Life & Work of Orson Welles.
