A third revised final script of Citizen Kane was sold by Bonham’s for $35,000 in 2013, while a second draft once owned by Welles was auctioned off at Sotheby’s for $164,797 a year later.
The author of “Citizen Kane: A Filmmaker’s Journey” will make a trio of appearances in Southern California this month.
The expanded “Citizen Kane: A Filmmaker’s Journey” contains new research and insight into how Orson Welles overcame a flawed script, studio infighting, and efforts to suppress the film.
The drop in image quality that began at about the 30-minute mark on the feature disc has been fixed on the replacement copies. The image throughout the film is slightly darker and richer.

Days after reports surfaced that one of the Blu-ray discs in the Criterion Collection’s upcoming Citizen Kane set was defective, the prestige label has announced a program to replace the disc for free.
Reportedly, the problem isn’t with the eagerly anticipated 4K UHD disc but with the version of the film found on the Blu-ray.
“(It) looks fine until the 30-minute mark, at which point the image turns all gray and milky with the black levels and sharpness totally out the window.”
The UK release has fewer special features than the Criterion set, but the package includes the film on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, a 48-page book, 20-page souvenir program, reprints of press releases, double-sided poster, five collectible art cards, and three stills.
Angel City Press will publish “Citizen Kane: A Filmmaker’s Journey” on January 18, 2022 as a 352-page paperback.
It is an expanded take on Harlan Lebo’s 2016 hardcover.
Lebo is a senior fellow at the Center for the Digital Future at USC Annenberg.
Along with a new restoration, Criterion is loading the box set with special features including the BBC documentary “The Complete Citizen Kane,” a televised 1979 reunion of Orson Welles and former partner John Houseman and no fewer than three audio commentaries. The 80th anniversary set is slated for release on November 23.
