Editor’s note: R.H. Greene is no stranger to Orson Welles fans, who fondly recall his impressive 2011 documentary “Airborne” for Southern California Public Radio. He has been kind enough to allow Wellesnet to preview Act 1 of his latest effort “War of the Welles,” which features “Star Trek” actor George Takei. The special will be made available nationwide to mark “The War of the Worlds” 75th anniversary on October 30.

“War of the Welles” – produced for Southern California Public Radio via KJPCC-FM in Los Angeles – is a celebration of the collective achievement by the Mercury and the individual achievement of Orson Welles in creating “The War of the Worlds,” with the panic de-emphasized and the process in the foreground.
Like my previous Welles doc – “Airborne: A Life in Radio with Orson Welles” – it is deeply archival and it tries to have new things to say.
This is a rough (cut) of the first act, generated for national syndication. If you like what you hear and want more, please let your local public radio station know, it is available to them all for broadcast this Halloween.
