Update: Frank Marshall’s acceptance speech from January 8, 2019 — “Finishing this film (The Other Side of the Wind) after such a long journey and to be honored by the National Board of Review just doesn’t get much better than this. Orson Welles continues to inspire and amaze us. He was ahead of his time then and he is still ahead of his time…It is so modern. It’s exciting and challenging.”

The National Board of Review, the century-old New York-based collective that annually helps kick off awards season, has honored Orson Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind and the Morgan Neville companion documentary They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead.

The two films are joint recipients of the William K. Everson Award for Film History.

The honor, named after the late film historian and preservationist, has been bestowed 18 times in the past 24 years.

Past recipients include Martin Scorsese, George Stevens Jr. and Robert Osborne.

NBR honorees in major categories included Green Book as best film of the year; Bradley Cooper as best director for A Star is Born; Viggo Mortensen as best actor for his work in Green Book; and Lady Gaga was honored as best actress for A Star is Born.

The awards will be presented in New York City on January 8.

Netflix’s award season push suggests Welles and The Other Side of the Wind be considered for special recognition in 11 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

Actors Peter Bogdanovich and John Huston are also suggested as worthy of consideration, as well as cinematographer Gary Graver and composer Michel Legrand.
