Noted Welles scholar James Naremore honored by Indiana University

James Naremore

James Naremore, author of The Magic World of Orson Welles and other noteworthy books on cinema, received the President’s Medal for Excellence from Indiana University earlier this week.

Naremore helped found the university’s  Cultural Studies program, founded the Film Studies program and taught courses in film history for both graduate and undergraduate students. Now retired, he  is chancellor’s professor emeritus of film studies, English and comparative literature.

He  recently recorded the audio commentary for The Criterion Collection’s acclaimed home video release of  Chimes at Midnight. Naremore provided similar commentaries on the DVD releases of Welles’ Touch of Evil and Mr. Arkadin.

Naremore was the keynote speaker at the  100 Years of Orson Welles: Master of Stage, Sound and Screen conference at Indiana University last year.

The President’s Medal for Excellence is presented to those who have achieved exceptional distinction in public service, service to Indiana University, achievement in a profession or exceptional achievement in the arts, humanities, sciences, education and industry.

Naremore’s cinematic research has focused not only Welles, but directors Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick.
