The Other Side of the Wind won its first major awards on Sunday as the film’s completion received a special citation from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and Bob Murawski and the late Orson Welles were honored for best editing by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle.
Murawski was warmly congratulated on social media in postings from producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza, associate producer Ruth Hasty, negative cutter Mo Henry and first assistant editor Dov Samuel.
Samuel noted, “it’s always a privilege to work with such an amazing editor. This film even more so because of Orson Welles.”
Hasty, who supervised post-production added, “The editing team worked their butts off on Wind and went above and beyond because they were all passionate about the film and about making sure they were true to Orson’s vision.”
Murawski’s work has been lauded by critics as he was awarded the inaugural Passion Award at The Other Side of the Wind‘s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August.
The Chicago Film Critics Association had nominated Murawski and Welles for best editing, but they lost out to Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, which took home five awards there on Sunday.
The Other Side of the Wind’s awards chances were dealt two setbacks in recent days.
Variety reported that the movie’s screenplay, credited to Welles and companion Oja Kodar, did not meet the eligibility requirement of the Writers Guild of America awards. Likewise, the score by Michel Legrand does not meet the requirements for an Oscar consideration, as established by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The WGA reason is uncertain, however AMPAS felt the film’s soundtrack contained a “considerable amount of source music not composed.”
In its awards season push, Netflix has suggested Welles and The Other Side of the Wind for special recognition in 11 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Actors John Huston and Peter Bogdanovich are also suggested as worthy of consideration, as well as cinematographer Gary Graver and composer Michel Legrand.
The streaming giant has posted its For Your Consideration 2018 page at awards.netflix.com.
There are 20 films touted by Netflix, including Roma, 22 July and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
