Re: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix

Ray - does that mean that potentially we have two upcoming Criterion releases including Wind?

Re: Orson Welles Portfolio Sketches & Drawings book

This release would be the perfect place to house a bonus dvd featuring Orson Welles' Sketchbook! Either way it looks like a book worth picking up.

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

When I saw the delay I got excited that they may have been adding a bonus feature Othello style but obviously that wouldn't be the cause of a one week delay. Oh well, still can't wait to get this and do a double feature with the Kane blu ray.

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

Fountain of Youth is so good. That would be an absolute ace bonus feature on a Welles release but it's quality is so high that like you said if you paired it with something like Portrait of Gina then it would make a fine release. I may be alone but I much prefer Youth to Immortal Story and that got ...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

That seems to be typically the way Criterion operates, for example they didn't offer the colorized version of the F For Fake trailer either. But on the other hand The Complete Mr. Arkadin didn't adhere to their typical rules as it included a cut of the movie that was made specifically for the Criter...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

Obviously I'm excited about this release but I'm a bit baffled why there are no special features regarding the missing complete print. If this was a bonus feature on the laserdisc (I believe in the form of an audio essay with pictures of the stills) surely they could make a more elaborate version al...

Re: Criterion releases Othello on blu-ray

That's why Criterion is the best in the world. They could have easily just released it the first time around and most people wouldn't have cared at all and the rest of us would have happily bought it anyway for the multiple versions, just a little disappointed by its omission. Instead Criterion make...

Wow that sounds really interesting. Could you elaborate more on how it differs from the comprehensive version and which you prefer?

Re: Criterion releases Othello on blu-ray

Wow, that is a big disappointment. For at least 15 years my feeling had been that I wouldn't ever see a Filming Othello release unless Criterion ever got the rights to Othello. Now that ship has sailed and maybe we'll get it someday but my hope for it is gone. On a positive note I am still thrilled ...

Re: 'Orson Welles, Volume 3: One-Man Band' by Simon Callow

I found Callow's first Welles book (Road to Xanadu) to be full of interesting research and interviews but I disagreed with almost every opinion (of which there are many) that Callow expresses in the book. The book did feel strange at times and it seemed that he took Houseman's word as gospel and dis...

Re: Mr. Arkadin blog post on FforFilms.net

I can't really argue with anyone that doesn't appreciate Arden's performance but I felt it was akin to Tim Holt in Magnificent Ambersons. Both characters are very unlikeable but I feel like that that was the role they were meant to play - that typical Welles spin on the lead character NOT being the ...

Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?

true, but at least they got it right. Oddly enough, Shanghai was one of Welles' most straightforward releases during the DVD age. It was only released once and no one really complained about it.

Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?

I haven't seen either version yet, I've just read that most people seem that the "fixed" blu-ray seems too dark. You don't share that sentiment?

Re: New Lady From Shanghai Restoration in 2010?

So what's the feeling here on the contrast boosting for the new bluray? Does it seem consistent with his style and the way it was presented originally or does it seem like a new "enhancement"?
