Re: Official OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND Thread - All things OSotW he

Thank you for posting this, Glenn -- I certainly hadn't seen it. I enjoyed the quiet discomfort the scene evokes. I'm reminded a little of the screening scene with producer (Palance) and director (Lang) in Godard's Le mépris. The use of color and black & white is great.

Re: Too bad they can't close Wellesnet Facebook down instead.

I sadly have no money that i can send at this time. I did before, and have sent what i could. I appreciated the "Other Side of the Wind" script that Larry French emailed me...it seems like it happened long ago. I still monitor the forum regularly and am appreciative when anyone is able to ...

Re: Scene from "L'Uomo, La Bestia e La Virtù"

Wow, thanks for all that fantastic info Honest Iago. It's great to think that Welles leaving early forced them into the kinds of filming and editing trickery that became so common in his own work. I also had no idea that Leone had any Welles experiences -- two men that knew how to block and edit a c...

Re: The Stranger

Yes, it is a shame when restoration involves adulterating the original look of the film, something we now have to deal with during the bluray era. I have no way of viewing the HD broadcast, so as it is, Mr. Ryan's recommendation is sufficient for me to seek out the MGM DVD. Thanks, gentlemen. 8)

Re: The Stranger

Good discussion, folks

DVD Beaver indicates that the MGM US DVD release of the film from 2007 is the best option--and based on their captures it looks better than whatever bloody version i saw back in the day--Am i right to presume that nothing better has come out since?

Re: The Stranger

That article wasn't too bad actually. Makes me want to see a nice print of the film. Heck, for that matter, I guess I need to look into procuring a decent DVD of it! It's been a long time since I've seen it--completely forgot it had Robinson in it, whom i've recently seen in SCARLET STREET and WOMAN...

Re: Citizen Kane as cultural touchstone

In Columbia, Missouri (where i live currently) at Stephens College there is a yearly film festival showcasing the filmmaking of women.
This is called the Citizen Jane Film Festival

Re: Vincent D'Onofrio – Five Minutes, Mr. Welles

For what it's worth, to me Welles in this film did not seem so much as a dolt as he did a rather easily distracted fellow. I tend to think the portrayal was insinuating: if it had been important enough to Welles, he would have had the lines learned immediately. However, the learning of the lines is ...

Re: Welles and Shakespeare

The authorship of Shakespeare's works is a subject worthy of F for Fake. I always assumed, based on this film, that Welles truly didn't care who wrote the works.

Re: Could The Mozart Effect Explain Welles's Brain Development ?

I think you're correct. Of course in this instance the so-called Mozart effect--often reduced in practice to the simplification that merely hearing some gentle classical era music will spur on certain areas of brain development--is to be distinguished from developing a life with music, as Mr. Welles...

Re: Just saw Ambersons for the first time...

Was thinking about Ambersons lately. Wanted to resurrect a thread to post some ideas, picked this one by diceroll. Apologies in advance for any slips in cognition, logic, memory, or bounty of ignorance and assumption. Film is not my first language. I was surprised and pleased to find Carrington's bo...

The Long Hot Summer (1958)

So i've been going on a William Faulkner binge recently, and, after finishing "If I Forget Thee Jerusalem" (The Wild Palms), saw it referenced in Godard's Breathless (which i inexplicably hadn't seen yet)....a week or so later, while reading "The Hamlet", saw on the internet that...

Re: The Immortal Story on Youtube

Thanks for positing this. I have a VERY low quality VHS of this film, and it is all i have seen; this is much much much better. The film looks just beautiful. I do not think of this as minor Welles. It shows that he was still evolving stylistically. One day maybe we'll get a real release in this cou...

Re: Official OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND Thread - All things OSotW he

I rarely enjoy reading screenplays/scripts, but i must say that i really enjoyed reading this. I think it made for a far more complex reading experience than any of the Welles films as released would in written form. It seems like a much different creation than anything he had done, but still identi...

Re: Favorite Welles' films? - Lay it down, yo!

I am not one of the experts here, but i believe you are completely correct, nextren. I am not sure why it wasn't listed among his self-completed works. Having not seen the shorter version, i am not sure of the nature of the cuts. I would be very happy with such a region 1 release :) I was just watch...
