Re: Mr Arkadin as comedic?
I've also thought about the term "camp." Whether or not the term dates back to 1909 or not, I'll let etymologists determine; it probably relates to Chatauqua, another interest of Welles. I just know that, in the context of the 1940's and 1950's, the word "camp" was very little u...

Re: Mr Arkadin as comedic?
My take on MR. ARKADIN would not use the term "camp," mainly because that was an unfamiliar concept in 1955. Welles has a very serious purpose in the film. The OED cites the first print appearance of "camp" in terms of style as occurring in 1909. Welles, with his extensive theat...

Re: Too bad they can't close Wellesnet Facebook down instead.
I'm not just referring to the message board. The whole site has been left to languish, which has probably actually discouraged participation on the board. Jeff's ennui has finally enveloped all of Wellesnet.

Re: Too bad they can't close Wellesnet Facebook down instead.
I doubt there will be a reprieve this time but can anyone really be surprised about this? It's been pretty half-hearted since Jeff pulled out.

Re: Othello 3 DVD Set
Maybe a petition of some sort might be a good idea? Any specialty home video company (Criterion, Kino, etc.) would know already the importance of a project such as this and they'd probably also know already what the sales figures on previous Welles multi-version sets have been. What it's going to c...

Re: Official OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND Thread - All things OSotW he
Writer David Ehrenstein, in comments posted at David Cairns' wonderful film blog Shadowplay , had this to say regarding the TOSOTW brouhaha: Just off the phone with Bill Krohn. Not only is [the Guardian story] full of misinformation but it's coming from representatives of the Shah’s brother-in-law, ...

Re: Kane on Blu-ray
I interviewed George Feltenstein of Warner Home Video yesterday for a piece I am writing on the Warner Archives series. ...We talked about many other films and upcoming projects. It is great to know that someone who has a fan's appreciation of films is working in home video. Ray, did he give any in...

THE IMMORTAL STORY on R4 DVD
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the Australian company Madman has recently released a DVD of The Immortal Story : http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/13166 It's the 58-min. cut and features both English language and French language versions of the film. I haven't acquired it yet...

Re: "DONATIONS TO HELP KEEP WELLESNET ALIVE ON THE INTERNET"
Actually, Todd, my statement was meant facetiously, because, as far as I know, those scripts are not in fact being disseminated. Not that that should discourage anyone from donating. The renewed availability of the message board should be reward enough.

Re: "DONATIONS TO HELP KEEP WELLESNET ALIVE ON THE INTERNET"
Horray for the Wellesnet message board, back from the ashes. Every member here should prove their mettle and ante up to help keep the discussion going. Remember, Wellesnetters, each donation will entitle you to a genuine Cease & Desist Order direct from the estate of Orson Welles!

Re: Citizen Kane as cultural touchstone
I'm not sure if this will be of interest to you, keats, as this is not recent and only a reference to Welles apart from Kane , but I came across this while rereading Hugh Fordin's book on the Freed Unit at MGM, The World of Entertainment . Responding to MGM's concerns that there wasn't enough Gene K...

Re: Christian McKay's Awards Snub
It's worth noting, I think (and not wholly inappropriate), that Welles and Houseman took the name of their company from The American Mercury , H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan's magazine of iconoclastic social commentary, satire and high-toned American literature. The magazine was decidedly left...

Re: Hitchens bashes Welles's lunch partner
Ironically, Vidal would have been on the same page as Ayn Rand, that "high priestess of Darwinism", during the Reagan years, and undoubtedly would have concurred with her statement "I do not approve of Mr. Reagan's mixing of Capitalism and Religion. His anti-abortion stance is outrag...

Re: The problem with Chimes at Midnight
Roger, I thought the legal wrangle was strictly between the Spanish producers of Chimes and Harry Saltzman (who I believe provided completion funding for the film but later claimed total ownership). I was unaware of any involvement by Beatrice in this particular Welles snafu. Has she managed to thro...
