Re: New "The Deep" footage?

I hope this is valid. The man in the striped shirt whose face we can not see has a dark outline at the side that could resemble a beard similar to the one Harvey has for the film. Although, in all likelihood, Welles would have probably used a double for Harvey given that his "name" actors...

Re: Criterion releases Othello on blu-ray

Is this a new release, or a re-issue of the one discussed above? https://www.criterion.com/films/28621-othello The link is to the Criterion release which came out in 2017 and is the same one discussed in this thread. It contains both the initial 1952 version as well as revised version Welles did fo...

Re: 'Kane' loses perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

Thanks for posting that bit of history. With all the concern about Hearst, I'm surprised RKO did not insist on using the disclaimer (during the end credits, of course, as Welles would have never allowed it at the beginning of the film).

Re: 'Kane' loses perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

I posted this in a different thread this morning, but it really belongs here... Another little mystery has cropped up related to the recent "demotion" of Kane from a "100% Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes: The review sited in the story from 1941 notes that the "... no relati...

Re: Citizen Kane back in the theater for it's 80th anniversary

When i viewed Citizen Kane for the first time in a theater it was about twenty years ago in one of those multi-plex ones and they shown it widescreen and not the 1:33 aspect ratio. I did complain to the manager afterwards. Same situation - Welles' head was cropped in several scenes! I complained as...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

Looking forward to seeing this program. There was supposed to be a documentary on Welles and Isaac Woodard some years ago by Richard France, author of THE THEATER OF ORSON WELLES, and Robert Fisher, former manager of the Munich Museum (where the Welles archive is), but I don't know if that film was...

Re: Mr. Arkadin Blu-ray release from Germany

I'm quite surprised this new German Blu-ray release uses the same cover artwork as Criterion's. Was this release sanctioned by Criterion or is this some kind of bootleg release?

Re: Lady from Shanghai outtakes

I agree with Karl Morton IV's Facebook observation that these "outtakes" appear to be excised from the original footage for use as stock footage for other Columbia films (such as The Three Stooges' 1948 short Acapulco Antics - just kidding!). To that end, the value was preserving the extra...

Re: The Immortal Story on DVD & Blu-Ray

A good Blu-ray review from DVD TALK and it does talk about the framing of the image. http://trailersfromhell.com/the-immortal-story/#.V70ENY-cHIW One of the visual essays shows the widescreen frame line being used precisely in the very first shot. A mockup with sticks convinces us we’re looking at ...

Re: Ambersons links and info

It's amazing those windows still exist. I believe the "Spring" window shown being restored in the video was used as the middle window for the second floor staircase (it's visible only briefly in the shot of George and Isabel walking from the staircase to Wilbur and Isabel's bedroom followi...

Re: Welles' casting of Tim Holt

I wonder if Tim Holt ever made any comments later in his life about being in Ambersons? Actor Jim Beaver has told an intriguing story about being seated next to Holt at a dinner event circa 1971. Being a fan of Welles, Beaver asked Holt about the "George Minafer" role to which Holt noted ...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

... Was it Mankiewicz who proposed Hearst? I don't recall that ever being determined for sure in any Welles interviews I've read. If it wasn't ever asked of Welles, it should have been. Well, my proposed opening scene is taking liberties with the actual genesis of Kane in a way that Mank does throu...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

... HEART OF DARKNESS collapsed in December, 1939, and Houseman/Mank started the Kane screenplay around February 1940. So the movie has them getting a call from Welles about the makeup tests for HOD, just as they're settling into Victorville (?). I am very much in agreement with your overall assess...

Yeah, I'd say; it appears the photo they used of Everett Sloane is from nearly twenty years after Kane was released, and the one of Paul Stewart also dates from about fifteen years later.
