Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

Humor aside, a couple of big Hollywood names and an expectation of a payday might shake a few more memories loose, and open a few more doors.

Re: Criterion releases Othello on blu-ray

Is this a new release, or a re-issue of the one discussed above?

Re: 'Kane' loses perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

The Mark of Zorro is down to 93% since they found a Spanish review from 1941 complaining that the Douglas Fairbanks one from 1920 is better.
I think they're just trolling.

Re: interesting article on Paulie Kael's infamous Kane article

Andrew Sarris's response to Kael's article: https://www.villagevoice.com/2020/12/02/citizen-kane-v-pauline-kael/?fbclid=IwAR01W0TSpol6iNO5dk6czuR2XyP2UpxMM80YqmuqMYoPsBPkcqfHSeNx_FE A lot of us know that article. But the link scrolls down to its original printed appearance in the Village Voice --th...

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

Almost certain to be reported in Brazilian media, and word getting out that yankees with money are looking for something might turn out finders after a fee. Not like they aren't priceless.

Yes, all true.
But after Richard III, it's difficult to say that anything is impossible.

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

I have both the Criterion laserdisc set and blu ray. When playing the movie, I usually alter a couple of the latter scenes to restore them to at least their intended sequential order. I also stop it before the 'Disney ending', and display the original screenplay pages with photos. There is a lobby ...

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

I finaly found the original and unique recording. It was on a wire recording, never heard since 1951, with impressive good sound. How did you play a wire recording??? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording They sell them on eBay, but a well-equipped audio lab will have a couple in the back.

Re: Citizen Kane back in the theater for it's 80th anniversary

Viewed Gone With The Wind back in 2019 in the theater and the image looked a little darker and less colorful as compared to the Blu-ray. Happy i saw it in the theater and if i remember correctly every seat was taken. I saw it in a packed theatre in the 70's during a re-release. Suburban audience, n...

Re: Citizen Kane back in the theater for it's 80th anniversary

Fathom Events and TCM Big Screen Classics will show in selected theaters Citizen Kane for it's 80th anniversary on September 19th. I will be there if it is shown in the Chicago area. https://www.fathomevents.com/series/tcm-big-screen-classics Only been to one of these--"North By Northwest"...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

Glad to see a finished product has finally emerged about this important subject. Quite impressive in its totality, showing how what happened to Isaac Woodard led, step by step, to Brown vs Board of Education . Refreshing to see the emphasis on the ordinary people who made it happen, and not only th...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

https://www.pbs.org/video/chapter-1-blinding-isaac-woodard/ If it doesn't turn up on your player, it's the Affadavit broadcast, illustrated with some powerful art. The first words you hear are Good Morning, this is Orson Welles speaking. I'd like to read you an affadavit . . . . Richard Gergel expl...
