I don't have many MGM DVDs, but they generally include at least a trailer and a featurette or two. Of course, that doesn't even begin to compare with the lavish bonuses that Criterion generally includes with DVDs, but MGM isn't nearly as bad (in my opinion) as Sony/Columbia when it comes to bonus f...

I just found out about this today, so I thought I would share it: http://www.afi.com/silver....x#chime Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the first screening with Keith Baxter present, but I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out this weekend, since it will be my first opportunity to...

Certain areas have been a bit inhospitable towards Welles in the past... I won't say it is completely implausible. Even in his youth (from what I know), Welles had a remarkably voracious appetite (nothing particularly wrong with that). The problem for me, at least, comes from accepting that Welles ...

I must admit that I haven't watched The Third Man in ages, but outside of some compression artifacts, I don't remember anything akin to watching the film while on acid...(good description, though!)...Actually, it is a bit funny that you say that, since more than one reviewer has cited the old DVD a...

Why not? Would it still be considered buying a 'pirated' copy if several people chipped in to buy a copy, and one of those people had a LD player and made DVD copies for everybody who had contributed funds?

The big difference betwen TOSOTW and those other projects comes down to the fact that it was 'nearly' complete. With most of the other projects that you listed, filming was not complete, or something else was missing (i.e. no audio for Four Men). So TOSOTW offers a much more complete portrait than ...

NOTE: There are actually two versions of the French DVD. The one that I have is in a slim-line case (with a blue & white cover) and does not have the trailer or the outtakes from TIOW.

is it on the CD release of Mancini's score from a few years ago? There were some passages from the score that I really liked, so if it is on that release, I'll definitely pick it up.

As somebody who has only seen the 'restored' version of TOE, I'm perhaps not qualified to voice my opinion, but I think that retaining the credits would have considerably detracted from the opening shot. But then again, I must say that I am partial to having as few credits at the beginning of a fil...

Well, I'll mostly leave my own personal opinions about The Beatles to the side, but I found Welles' citation of them to be disappointing for several reasons. For me, tons of different names come to mind when thinking of musique concrete, including Edgard Varese, Steve Reich, Iannis Xenakis, Karlhei...

I just came across this yesterday evening, in case anybody else has yet to see it: http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=64 Personally, I doubt that I'll be upgrading my set, especially since (aside from a new transfer and a higher bitrate) it doesn't really offer much that wasn't part of t...

As far as I know (and I don't claim to be a Welles scholar), Beatrice owns the rights to *only* Othello. Oja owns the rights to all of Welles' unreleased and unfinished films. I doubt she has any claim towards The Immortal Story, though I suspect that she might have some rights to F For Fake (but i...
