Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

Agreed, but I don't think I noticed it until the third or fifth viewing. Didn't Welles have a quote about leaving stuff in that the audience (meaning first-timers) won't see anyway? Yeah, I didn't notice that it was Rich Little going up to the car until a later viewing as well. (But now that I've s...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

They could have fixed this by reversing the film on Huston's problematic closeups. Then Huston would always be looking left. I wonder why they didn't. It doesn’t always work, especially if you’re combining it with other non-flopped incarnations of the same closeup. Maybe the eyeballs would be point...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

Maybe the Crunch Time for Cannes is why somebody here mentioned a "director's cut" for a future release? But surely they were able to keep working on the editing after the Cannes showing was cancelled... or not? I’ve never worked on a project that had its schedule extended when a deadline...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

A very good review by David Walsh appears in today's Arts Section of the World Socialist Web Site. It's a good review in the sense that it's interesting and well written (though its somewhat overwrought social and political analysis lost me). But the review is pretty mixed as to its assessment of &...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

Here's a very frustrating podcast discussion of "Wind" by 3 critics who are mostly confused by the project. https://slate.com/culture/2018/11/slate-culture-gabfest-the-other-side-of-the-wind-robyn-honey-blank-check.html Seems to be a lot of that around. I ran across what alleged to be an ...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

I'm not finding the betrayal by Otterlake (if we're trying to match it to betrayals in other Welles films.) Brooksie probably doesn't have the money for Jake to finish Wind , and doesn't want to bother Max David further (and possibly endanger his own career.) That's betrayal? The real abuse of trus...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

Speaking of Norman Foster, has anyone done an image search to see how he looked back in the day? Dang! It's called aging . My white hairs do witness it (and yes, a strikingly handsome young man he was.) I'm intrigued by Foster's string of Mr. Moto films he wrote and directed. Anyone here se...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

It does seem odd with TOSOTW that there is a conventional cast, but also people appearing as themselves. I think only the young movie directors are listed in the credits as playing themselves. But it's a distinction without a real difference. They could just as easily be playing fictional young mov...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

And "It'sAll True" a lot of which was faked by Welles: the drowned fisherman story, the restaging of the juangadeiro's voyage, parts of Carnival restaged in a studio, etc. Hmmm. I wasn’t thinking of the jangadeiro stuff as documentary — I think it would depend on how he was going to narra...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

I’m not understanding something. Didn't John Cassavetes get there first? Or is there a distinction between what he did and what these newer people did, apart from shooting and editing digitally? I never heard of such a genre. It does sound like Wind though. It’s a new term to me too, not that I’m t...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

This is a small niggle, but as Jake is to drive off at the end, his car is stopped next to a ticket booth. We just saw Dale wandering around the house; did he walk to the drive-in? Everyone else drove. (Well, Dale must have had a car to get to the house in the first place - it's just a disorienting...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

I never attended any screening in Santa Monica and never saw this alleged sequence. You're mixing me up with someone else. --Jonathan Rosenbaum Damn. Sorry, man. As noted, it was indeed F.X. Feeney. I’m more inclined to believe my brain made up the extension to the scene now. Again, profuse apologi...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

maybe on that reel of stuff that Henry Jaglom put up on vimeo years ago It's not in the vimeo footage. That scene ends in the vimeo rough cut at the same point that it ends in the finished film. I’m sure you’re right. Maybe it was one of the presentations that the Munich Film Museum toured around w...
