Re: Mr. Arkadin Blu-ray release from Germany
Thanks for the info Sergio and i do have the Criterion dvd box set so do i wait for Criterion to re-release it on Blu-ray or buy this release? Well, I'm glad to have it because it is in HD and so offers an image quality that is a bit superior to the older standard definition DVD. There's not a mass...

Re: Mr. Arkadin Blu-ray release from Germany
I received a copy of the Blu-ray yesterday. It misspells Paola Mori's name on the cover ('Paola Miro'), which isn't a good sign! But, in fact, it seems to be a perfectly decent release. If you have the Criterion DVD then admittedly this may not offer a huge leap forward technically. Confidential Rep...

Thought this might be worthy of note. Universal, which controls the RKO library in the UK (it's Warners in the US) has annouced that on 12 September they are releasing a Region 2 Welles DVD box set featuring KANE, AMBERSONS and TOUCH OF EVIL - Ambersons will of course be an English language first on...

This is truly incredible news and I hope all the details get confirmed really, really soon - when it comes to the latest news about Welles, I always want everything confirmed in triplicate. Thanks to a kind person on this forum, I was able to finally see the 'Corinth' version of MR ARKADIN, and I am...

This has been treated exhaustively in previous discussions, but I would add that David Thomson's book is best avoided, or rather, left until last, and that both Frank Brady's CITIZEN WELLES and the Bogdanovich/Welles/Rosenbaum THIS IS ORSON WELLES may well be the best books on Welles after Naremore'...

Personally, I think Welles actually had 1.66:1 in mind, which is the ratio for TRIAL and CHIMES, although that was a ratio common on the continent and not in the US, I admit... Having studied 35mm prints on a Steenbeck of both the original and the restored versions of TOUCH OF EVIL, what is clear is...

Finally! I was starting to wonder if anyone was ever going to comment on this piece of news... Thanks Glenn for your excellent article on the film. Truly illuminating. I'd forgotten that Mitchell was originally cast - I hate to say it, but he would have been better casting than Arnold in opposition ...

This is slightly off topic, but Criterion are finally going to be releasing a DVD of the uncut version of William Dieterle's classic Faust story THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER aka ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY aka HERE IS A MAN, which they had previously released only on Laser Disc. The commentary by Bruce E...

I've just got my copy of the French DVD of THE TRIAL - I have to agree with everything that Jeff has already told us about the image quality - it is really quite superb! I found it hard to remove the subtitles on the full-length version (no problem on the "1984" version) however and had to resort to...

I thought you might be interested to read this review of the new Region 2 Special edition DVD of CITIZEN KANE which is not actually released until the end of July in the UK. Frankly, I thought the Warners release was magnificent, barring the odd raindrop going AWOL, but this review is nothing short ...

In the UK, on Region 2, Carlton have made a number of Powell and Pressburger films available - AMOLAD, BLIMP, GONE TO EARTH and RED SHOWS are the only special editions however - RED SHOES has different extras to the Criterion disc, but Criterion bought the BLIMP documentary from them and used it on ...

I finally got to see Rick Schmidlin's version of GREED projected on the big screen at the National Film Theatre in London and it was an absolute revelation to me as I already knew the Stroheim film pretty well (or thought I did). The four hours just flew by - it was magnificent. I must admit that th...
