I received a dub of a tape someone bought direct from Corinth: Lower end of commercial VHS quality, in my opinion. Watchable, but lacking all nuance.

Guessing that no one here was the lucky winner on ebay a while back....

I didn't realize it was so different from the older version (which I have on a 6th gen VHS tape), which might have helped push me over the edge. I thought all I was going to be paying up for was some improved quality.

Dang, I've been hoping to find one of the screener copies of One Man Band (from when Showtime was almost able to show it) for ages, and now it appears on ebay here and it's already too rich for my blood! Wish someone with deep pockets would copy this "master" to DVD-r to preserve for posterity....

Although their website might not explicitly state it, if you call them they will probably offer to do a one-off dub to VHS for you. As I recall, they charge something like $60 or $80 for that service.

Thanks, yeah, for some reason the other thing that has got me hesitating is that in actually looking at the listings for CDroms on, eg, ebay, is that there don't seem to be many shows on them that aren't on the web site (though perhaps the quality would be better...)

$50+ ? Yes. Unless you know where to get it for less? Oh, no, not at all. Wish I did! I'll be curious to hear about whether the Brazilian DVD is as good as the Japanese. (I don't think that has been metioned here?) I exchanged email with the person on ebay selling it (or, at least, one of the peopl...

I want to underline your statement that while the Corinth version has some similarities to the PD version, one needs to throw all kinds of caveats around that statement: The pacing of the Corinth version, and nuances in terms of intercutting between pieces of scenes, etc., in the Corinth version is,...

Yeah, unless one could find a version cleaned up (that didn't do more damage than good in the cleaning) this is about as good as it gets. Purists won't like that it's PAL and thus not at the right speed. Barring easy access to the Criterion laserdisc, though, this is the way to go, for sure, if you ...

Results: This Corinth Arkadin is clearly the best version of the film in terms of narrative and pacing. Yes, the Confidential Report is acceptable -- and avialable in better quality, for sure -- but there are pure Welles-ian nuances in the Corinth Arkadin which are a pleasure.

It is possible to order that issue directly from the publisher, for $7 including shipping (bulk rate in USA, other methods/destinations cost more):

Which are the alternate takes used in the "Tony Curtis version"...?

Looks like the new PAL DVD is the going to tide me over till I can find a copy of the Corinth version. (Yeah, no more possibility of paying TOO MUCH on ebay for the Criterion LD of confidential report.)
