Does anybody know if the documentary "In Our Hands" is available on video tape? Also, has anyone here seen the film? I'm curious how much there is of Welles in it.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Hi all, Well, this is cool - I log into the site and find my Mike Caveney interview being discussed! Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I, too, found Mike's comments to be very eloquent and insightful. And how about that photo of Mike and Welles that Mike's wife took? As a matter of fact, mteal, a...

I am looking for a quote of OW's on editing. I think it goes something like: "For me, editing is THE art of film." Or something to that effect. I could have sworn that I read it in "This is OW," but a fairly thorough search through that book has yielded no results. Anyone know the quote I'm talking ...

Of course, I agree 110%, Jeff, which is why I tried to emphasize the very particular circumstances of "The Deep" in my footnotes. My hunch is that Welles did purposefully stop work on "The Deep" at some stage, for reasons stated, but I think this is an exceptional case and - in my opinion - doesn't ...

Thanks to all for their very kind words about my Curtis Harrington interview. As I state in the interview itself, the people I've spoken to who really knew and worked with Welles all stress what a gracious, kind man he was. Sadly, it seems that many biographers don't choose to speak to these people ...

jbrooks,

The narration you hear in "One Man Band" of OW discussing Dinesen was to open his film of "The Dreamers."

Regarding OW's radio programs, are any episodes of "Orson Welles' Almanac" or "Orson Welles Commentaries" available on audio cassette?

Has anyone ever determined the veracity of Welles' claim that Gideon Welles - Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy - was his great-grandfather (or a relation of any kind)? I'm curious if there is any kind of family tree for Welles that goes further back than his parents.

Thanks for the kind words, all. It was a real pleasure to interview Baxter; amazing to me that so few (any?) of the biographers have ever talked to him for any length.

R Kadin - Thanks for the note on that misspelling. I'll have my editor correct it ASAP.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks very much for the props on my article, all. It is appreciated. You all may be interested in my upcoming interview with Keith Baxter; it should be online within the week. jbrooks: There are two 'farewell' scenes from "The Dreamers" and both are excerpted in "One Man Band." Glenn, The list colwood linked to (and you pasted) actually could be the one I was referring to having heard about. I'm just not positive. I suppose it's conceivable that S&S conducted a poll to determine - in abstract - the greatest directors in history, but it sure doesn't look like it's on their ...

colwood, Thanks. But I wonder if S&S didn't at one point actually poll critics around the world as to specific question of who was the greatest filmmaker. Here they've just assembled a "greatest filmmaker" list based on the results of their poll for the greatest movies. Oh well. I'll keep looking. P...

All, Over the years, I've read of references to a Sight & Sound poll in which Welles was voted the greatest director in history. I'm not referring to the poll S&S conducts every ten years to determine the greatest FILMS, but rather one which voted on filmmakers. Does anyone know what I'm talking abo...

mteal, Where did you get the information regarding Welles not even wanting to look at the re-discovered "It's All True" footage? Just curious. At least until the end of the '40s, it seemed he very much wanted to locate and complete the film, but by the mid-80s it sounds as though he'd changed his mi...

I saw a still from "Merchant of Venice" years ago and was astonished at how much it resembled "Eyes Wide Shut" - something confirmed to me by the extended clip. Everything from the masks to the actual blocking of when Shylock enters the room called to mind the Kubrick film - to say nothing of the mo...
