Re: Callow begins work on Vol. 4

I've recently been reading Callow's books for the first time (only a 24 year delay for Vol. 1!) and I have to say that I think the It's All True section is the best writing I've ever read on that topic: ruthlessly even-handed and wonderfully intuitive: just wonderful writing. I hope Callow has aband...

Re: It's All True, again

I strongly feel that IAT should be completely re-edited and re-scored before being re-released. It was a noble, but botched attempt. As Welles said, editing is not an aspect but the aspect of cinema, and the difference between the men and the boys (sexist, I know) is knowing when to leave out a shot...

Sherman Clark's TOE photos

https://cinephiliabeyond.org/touch-evil-orson-welles-grandiose-film-noir-took-four-decades-shine-intended-form/ At cinephiliabeyond.org there's a colour photo of Welles and the crew setting up for the crane shot at the beginning of the film; it's the only colour shot of the TOE production I've ever ...

Re: The movie within the movie- a silent film?

I've never heard that before, Le Chiffe- that "Cut" spoken by Hanneford would've ended both movies simultaneously- that's fantastic!

The movie within the movie- a silent film?

I had a strange thought that Welles made 2 silent movies- Too Much Johnson and The Other Side of the Wind (the movie within the movie). In both there is no dialogue and in both music has been added. And, of course in Wind there are sound effects and the brief speaking of Hanneford- but essentially b...

Re: The Magnificent Ambersons Reconstruction

I hope you don't mind me adding my own 2 cents worth, ( and you probably already know this) but there is some dialogue in the Mercury radio show that I think could be transferred to a reconstruction; I remember in particular that there's a discussion between Uncle Jack and Eugene Morgan at the big b...

Re: Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic coming to Netflix

Not looking forward to this- being centered on Mankiewicz, it'll inevitably be sympathetic to his POV, and the family wouldn't allow this unless HM was portrayed as the sole author of Kane. A few months back when TCM played Kane, Ben Mankiewicz actually said "the film that my uncle wrote."...

Re: It's All True, again

I remember hearing that after the IAT film cans were discovered in 85, Welles was contacted about them and he expressed no interest, which surprised me.

Nic: I'm curious as to why you think the change regarding Mavis helps the film.

Ray: I believe it was George Schaeffer who ordered the Ambersons cuts and reshoots, though I can't recall if he had been fired from RKO by the time the picture was released.

Re: Zugsmith's script at auction, Monash, Welles...

The name change from "Badge" to "Touch' seemed to happen quickly, between Jan 24th and Feb. 5th. Tana must have been added at the last second.

Zugsmith's script at auction, Monash, Welles...

Here's a TOE script that was sold at auction on Nov. 24th, 2014. It's Albert Zugsmith's screenplay named "Badge of Evil" dated Jan. 1957, and it has a red Universal cover and was sold with an 8 page press book. Now, most of us have the Feb. 5th, 1957 screenplay in photocopy form with a pla...

Re: It's All True, again

I just noticed that the name for Shakespeare's Henry VIII before it was published in the first folio was "All Is True" and that the Globe Theatre burned down during a performance of AIT; some strange synchronicity with "It's All True"...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

I don't know if this has been covered, but has anybody made a precise timeline for Welles's actual shooting days on Wind? I'm still not clear on whether he started shooting in late 70 or early 71 (on the film within the film), and then while he was shooting Fake, was Wind interrupted and then later ...
