Re: Beau Geste
Thanks Terry, that inspired me to do a little digging online. Teichmann, according to Wiki, took over writing the Campbell Playhouse shows from Howard Koch, whose last CP show was THE GLASS KEY, which was the week before BEAU GESTE, so Beau must have been Teichmann's first show for the Mercury. He a...

Re: Hemingway
I enjoyed the whole thing, although Hemingway is still a mystery to me; part genius, part toxic-macho nutjob. I watched it looking for clues as to why Welles was so interested in him. Welles certainly didn't have the love of killing animals that Hemingway had, although they both had a love of watchi...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard
In this case and elsewhere, he brought strong Drama modes to the telling of True-LIfe tales; and on the other side, with such things as CAESAR and NATIVE SON, he used elements of Reality* in Drama. Quite impressive in its totality, showing how what happened to Isaac Woodard led, step by step, to Br...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard
Looking forward to seeing this program. There was supposed to be a documentary on Welles and Isaac Woodard some years ago by Richard France, author of THE THEATER OF ORSON WELLES, and Robert Fisher, former manager of the Munich Museum (where the Welles archive is), but I don't know if that film was ...

Re: Mercury Summer Theatre
Very nice. KING LEAR, especially, is better than I've heard before. I wonder if this is the only time Agnes Moorhead ever did Shakespeare on radio.

Re: Song of Myself
Another good find, Terry. I have to confess that I don't have a huge appreciation for poetry, but when Welles is reading it, that helps pique my interest a lot. SONG OF MYSELF is also considered by many to be the great American poem, kind of like the way CITIZEN KANE is considered the great American...

Right. Only rich people had color sets back then. Too bad there wasn't some way to preserve it in color. Maybe if they find a copy of the quality that Vidamonte indicated at the top of the thread, they could colorize it! Entertaining show. Thanks again, Terry.

Re: "Around the World"
That strobe must have been an ingenious effect. Sounds like Welles was really trying to blur the line between theater and film. Good luck to Vincent Longo on this project. He did a good lecture on Welles's drawings at the centennial Welles fest in Woodstock.

Re: Lady from Shanghai outtakes
Great job, Terry! Fascinating footage. I wonder what that first part with the fire trucks and the fire is. Maybe not Welles-related, although some takes seem shot in the angular, corner-to-corner style that Welles liked. Maybe there is other Wellesian outtake footage out there on Archive, waiting to...

Re: The Immortal Story on DVD & Blu-Ray
Thanks for the info, Roger. Yes, most of Clay's pitch to the sailor at dinner was gone. Perhaps Welles was dissatisfied with the French actor's delivery of it. Welles shooting two different versions of dialogue scenes for dubbing purposes sounds logical, but apparently, his English version didn't do...

Re: The Immortal Story on DVD & Blu-Ray
I agree with you, Roger. The extra four minutes are not make-or-break, but seem to me to enhance the film's stoic qualities. That line you mentioned, which is actually "Mr. Clay had come to have faith in his own omnipotence", seems essential to me, making Mr. Clay's godlike pretensions mor...

Re: The Immortal Story on DVD & Blu-Ray
A good Blu-ray review from DVD TALK and it does talk about the framing of the image. http://trailersfromhell.com/the-immortal-story/#.V70ENY-cHIW One of the visual essays shows the widescreen frame line being used precisely in the very first shot. A mockup with sticks convinces us we’re looking at ...

Re: Immortal Story 62-minute version
Craig, my guess is that you're correct: the film was cut down in order to fit the 1-hour time slot. edmoney, the cuts consist mainly of dialogue. I don't think there were any whole scenes eliminated. One of my favorite lines in the film was cut, when the narrator says towards the beginning that &quo...

Re: BBC radio play Voodoo Macbeth
Entertaining little program. At only 43 minutes, it can't go into real depth on anything, but it hits the main behind-the-scenes points of the production well. It'll be interesting to see how the USC film compares when it comes out.
