Re: R.I.P. Gregory Sierra, TOSOTW actor
He was good in the film. Did anyone interview him about the experience? If not, too bad.

Re: Magnificent Ambersons reconstruction
Me too. There are many different ways to do a project like this, and I applaud Brian Rose's attempt to do something with animation, and hope it turns out well. Maybe someone will take a crack at the Deep Fake approach too sometime. Roger's version is wonderful for its day, but why not see what new t...

Re: Welles' first draft for Kane?
I would take what Houseman said with a pinch of salt as he was very bitter to Welles. I recall in an interview he was talking about someone he was working with at the time - can't recall when - and he mentioned Welles. I recall he said something like "we're making real films" That reminds...

Re: Welles' first draft for Kane?
Good question, Colmena. Here's part of an interview that Joseph McBride did with Susan King of GoldDerby recently: https://www.goldderby.com/article/2020/orson-welles-citizen-kane-mank/ King: Pauline Kael wrote her controversial ‘Raising Kane’ two-part piece in 1971 and you also wrote a rebuttal tha...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
Thanks for the Polanski link. Interesting program. I didn't know he had done AMADEUS on the stage, both directing and playing Mozart. I thought of Welles when Polanski describes the theme of the play as being how mediocrity is always trying to persecute genius, mainly out of jealousy. Your Kane idea...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
I've heard a lot about Polanski's film, but I don't think it's available in America yet, for well-known reasons. I don't know when it will be. Until then, I'll take your word for it that it's faithful to the real story. As an admirer of Polanski's films (not him), I look forward to seeing it sometim...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
Yeah, the film takes some dramatic license for sure, but then, Fincher's THE SOCIAL NETWORK was accused of doing the same thing ten years ago. I liked that film better than MANK. The Social Network is a masterpiece—does it matter that it bent the truth? : https://www.avclub.com/the-social-network-is...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
Like running for office. In the age of streaming, it's getting harder to tell which ones are the new movies and which ones are not. It's also getting harder to care. The only streaming service I have is Netflix, so I've probably missed a lot of contenders, and the only other new movie I watched on N...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
Well, that's the thing right there. Who knows what the truth is? As the old saying goes, never let the facts get in the way of a good story. If I remember correctly, the rest of that story concerns Welles suddenly screaming at Houseman because Houseman couldn't get tickets to MOBY DICK REHEARSED on ...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz
Welles told that to Barbra Leaming as well, and she put it in her Welles book. Houseman undoubtedly heard about it. Here's the schism from Houseman's point of view, when he appeared on The South Bank Show, two years after Welles's death: https://vimeo.com/114983081 Has anyone ever seen the Merv Grif...

Thanks Steve, good catch. That was Stiers, and he does the best Houseman I've ever heard.

Re: Welles' casting of Tim Holt
I'd like to see that sometime. Another place Welles may have visited, since it's only 40 miles from Kenosha, would be the Pabst Mansion in Milwaukee. This staircase looks pretty similar to the one in Ambersons: https://www.google.com/search?q=pabst+mansion&prmd=imnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&...

Re: Welles' casting of Tim Holt
Thanks Colmena. RKO film? Well, that seals it. Welles must have seen it.
It's an enjoyable little movie; no Ambersons, but worth watching for the Holt/TMA connection. It has a slightly Oedipal flavor too, as Holt competes with his own father for Ginger's affections.
