Re: Cotten quote re original ending of MA

JC: It is a dark sort of movie, more Chekhov than Tarkington. But Tarkington is also dark! (I've read the book.) In the original ending not only do you have the bleak Checkovian wrap up in the boarding house, but then we see Cotten driving his car into the over-built, polluted, sprawling American ci...

Cotten quote re original ending of MA

I gather then Joseph Cotton, at some point, characterized the original ending of Magnificent Ambersons as "too Checkovian for its own good." Or something like that. Can anyone please locate that quote for me?

Thanks!

Now also at Amazon Prime (where I just saw it), tho almost 20 mins shorter than the version at youtube.

One of the reviews I skimmed pointed out that the plot is derivative of Rosemary's Baby.

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'

A minor query, and apologies if this has been answered and I missed it.

At one point, Charlies Higham AKA Higgam, was part of the cast of characters.
Was he cut?
If he was in there, I missed him.

Re: Kane's encounter with the snowglobe

Thanks for your extensive reply, jbrooks. You asked: Was this story of Kane's history with the globe explored in the script? (or drafts of the script?) The only prior draft that I've read is #4 (using Carringer's enumeration) which is readily available online, and here the snowglobe is present on Su...

Re: Kane's encounter with the snowglobe

If it happens that anyone here is attending next week's film studies conference, "Stars & Screen," in Glassboro NJ,
I will be answering this question in a paper on "Welles' Alteration of the Climax of Citizen Kane."

Kane's encounter with the snowglobe

So the next time you watch Citizen Kane, for the nth time, and get to the scene when Kane, after smashing up Susan's Xanadu bedroom, comes upon her snowglobe.... please ask yourself: Does it seem that, given his reaction, he is encountering this item for the very first time? Or does it appear to be ...

Re: Citizen Kitsch -

In the crazy movie "Hellzapoppin" (sp?) at one point they come upon a Rosebud sled, and someone cracks, "Didn't they burn that?!"
So maybe Steven purchased the prop sled from Hellzapoppin?

Re: Welles on Jake Hannaford

Concerning Welles' personal fascination with the Other Side plot (which is made very clear by that transcript from _This is OW_) isn't the plot line to Big Brass Ring relevant? Since it is so similar: the story of ostensibly straight powerful celebrity politician, who is brought down my his closeted...

Re: Cinefiles Citizen Kane programs

I believe that Barbara Leaming, who wrote the closest we have to an authorized biography of OW also did a bio of Rita. She's definitely fond of Welles, so I would assume that her version of the OW-RH marriage would not be overly prosecutorial.

The CK Book contains The Shooting Script, dated 7/16/40 and the Cutting Continuity, dated 2/21/41.

The Shooting Script is also the 7th screenplay.

There was a problem with fire safety, and so the production has been postponed to some time in 2017.

Re: New book by Mank son says Welles wrote none of Kane

Carringer's very important essay on "The Scripts of CK" is also found in Naremore's _Handbook on CK_ and Gottesman's _Perspectives on CK_ (1996). But what's so surprising about the essay, since it is obviously relevant to what Welles contributed to the successive scripts, is that he does n...
