Welles notes... somewhere?, that he is particularly suited to play "King" roles.
(Not said boastfully, but just a recognition of his particular constitution and competence.)
Can anyone please re-locate that quote for me?
Thanks!

Re: Welles quote re Susan as most important?
But do you take that quote as a matter of Welles conceding that he is his own worst enemy, or just that that is the line on him-- which he would disagree with. Certainly he disputed the charge that he suffered a "fear of completion," as made by Higham et al. Meanwhile, I'm hoping that our ...

Re: Welles quote re Susan as most important?
Thanks for the link. The author was given access to all her papers, so perhaps there's a bio in the works? Let's hope. Here we have the post-CK decline of her career explained as follows: After seeing Dorothy on the big screen, every studio in town wanted to borrow her. But RKO refused. She then fel...

Welles quote re Susan as most important?
Somewhere... I came upon a quote by Welles pointing out that Susan is the most important character in CK. (Barring Kane himself, of course!) But I can't recall where I found it. I don't believe that it's from _This is OW_, where (for instance) it does not appear when the topic turns to Dorothy Comin...

Re: Mr Arkadin as comedic?
Hello Glenn, You there? It's been a while since our paths crossed. My recollection is that you are AKA Alex F. Yes? If so, I see that Clinton Heylin thanks "Alex F. for his memories of Arkadin," in his _Despite the System_. Does that mean that you participated in Mr A? (You're not indexed....

Re: the predominant interpretation of Rosebud?
Thanks for the link.
In this essay Bradshaw concludes by linking "Rosebud" to the death of Kane's son and first wife-- which Roger Ryan and I discuss in this same thread 3 years ago.

Re: Kael & Suber, etc.
In this excellent essay we have: "Actor George Coulouris (who played Thatcher, Kane’s guardian) and composer Bernard Herrmann attacked Kael in Sight and Sound’s fall 1972 edition." Can anyone lead me to these replies by Coulouris and Herrmann, apart from finding the original articles in th...

Re: Everglades ballad?
Thanks for that lead. Making use of it, I've gathered that this is the Cee Pee Johnson blues band, and Alton Redd is the vocalist, but there doesn't seem to be any recording of it, that I can track down. Not so far. I'm still confused as to whether this is also known as "In a Mizz," also a...

Everglades ballad?
Can anyone identify the song sung in the background during the Everglades party? Welles identifies it, in interview, as a Nat King Cole song, and NKC does a Rogers and Hart song "This Can't be love," but the tune and lyrics are different. When I do a net search for the lyrics, I only get r...

Re: Interviews from the 1991 Kane LD
My mistake. Not a commentary. Rather what we have is: "A Visual Essay of over 100 photos — many never published before — by leading authority on CITIZEN KANE Robert L. Carringer covering such topics as: story board sketches; set designs; cinematography; make-up and memos on the Kane/Hearst cont...

Re: Interviews from the 1991 Kane LD
Thanks for this. I have dial-up (yes, true!) so can't get into it yet.
Another feature of this laserdisc was a running commentary by Robert Carringer, which I'd love to hear.
(Is it available in any form?)

> So is not Welles's Kane really a composite figure of which Hearst is only one part?
#23 in Kael's "Raising Kane" has much to say about the relevance of both Insull and Harold McCormick to Kane.

Re: Susan's departure & Kane's death?
Well, our names here are both Spanish: mountain vs. beehive. Thanks for the replies. My mistake. But I still believe that the "Rosebud..." that Kane whispers, while crying, in Susan's bedroom, has much of the same meaning as the "Rosebud" that he intones, so portentously, before ...

Susan's departure & Kane's death?
I've been assuming that when Kane departs Susan's bedroom, stunned, holding her snowglobe, that he's on his way to his bedroom, where he will then die-- as we see in the opening scene. That is, that the day that Susan leaves is the same day that Kane dies. My reason for viewing it that way is becaus...
