Re: Native Son
...One of the marvelous oddities in the Lilly radio collection that was uploaded last year was this stage timing for the courtroom scene. Can't tell who the actor is, if anyone knows... It could be Philip Bourneuf, who played District Attorney Buckley in the play. Compare the voice to this "On...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'
...In the new Rosenbaum/Naremore commentary, Rosenbaum suggests that the later Eugene/Lucy scene in the garden doesn't look like it was directed by Welles. I think he's wrong, but I can't say for sure. That's got to be Bernard Hermann's organ music though, since it is on the CD of the full original...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'
...Part of me wishes that Carringer would have recorded his commentary anew, since his laserdisc commentary was recorded prior to doing much of his significant research and his comments feature some notable errors and false assumptions. Some of these errors were corrected in his later writings, so ...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'
...The mystery I cannot work out is, why didn't Welles save the workprint?... I don't think this is as mysterious as it seems. Technically, thirty-four reels of 35mm film were shipped by RKO to its own office at Cinédia Studios in Brazil. This was done for Welles to view the material, of course, bu...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'
Blu-ray.com has a interesting review of the blu-ray release. Just received my copy last night and did a a/b comparison with the dvd release of a few years ago and a big improvement in image & sound. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Magnificent-Ambersons-Blu-ray/56156/#Review Per usual, Blu-ra...

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'
...The AMBERSONS print, on the other hand, was not meant for public projection. In all likelihood, it was indeed shipped back to the US, to RKO, where it was destroyed. I still hold out hope until documentation of that shipment surfaces, but it’s not very likely the print is still there. The docume...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'
Personally, I think this whole exchange between Hannaford and Otterlake regarding being in touch with the youth should have been deleted. This idea has already been addressed a number of times earlier in the film and feels redundant, plus the "our revels have ended?" moment is really the ...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'
Harsh review from L.A. Blade... Ehrenstein actually has some interesting things to say about gay characters in Welles' films and screenplays in the review (appropriate for an LGBT news outlet). He's free to criticize what he sees as lack of plot structure and character development in Wind , but his...

...One would also have to have a warped sense of humor to consider the 'mixed party' in TOUCH OF EVIL to be any kind of fun, although the gang thugs probably enjoyed it... I forgot about that one! No, I didn't mean to suggest there was a party scene in Touch of Evil , but there are a number of ense...

Re: ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ being finished in Los Angeles for Netflix
While, in general, the completed film matches Welles' script fairly closely in the order the scenes play out, I can understand why some sequences have been rearranged. We can tell by the outtake footage of people carrying lamps around behind Dennis Hopper, Paul Mazursky and Henry Jaglom that the imp...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'
Yes, that use of parties in Welles' work is something I never really considered either. All three Shakespeare films have party scenes (Merchant of Venice as well?). Only The Trial and The Immortal Story are too dour for anyone to have much fun.
