Re: Two New Italian books on Welles

Yeah, that makes sense, and the photo book has a handful of shots of Welles sitting at a table putting on the Shylock makeup and wig, with a boom mike and light in shot.

Two New Italian books on Welles

The Welles centennial has spawned the expected wave of books, but two recent volumes from Italy should be of interest to followers of the director as well. Published by the Centro Sperimentale Di Cinematografia, these two books have the added bonus of being dual Italian-English editions, making them...

Re: Around the World missing tv episode found

The third party seller on Amazon is the label that released it. So you can either order from their own site or through Amazon, basically. I ordered the BFI edition, as it has a bonus half hour interview from 1967 that isn't on the US edition. They're probably more or less identical transfer-wise.

Re: Katina Paxinou's Scene in The Trial

Well, Bogdanovich says in his intro to the finished book that Welles played a major role in constructing the text, and Welles' drafts of the book in the archive show this - they're heavily rewritten and re-arranged by Welles. Even in the transcripts, any number of times he tells Bogdanovich to frame...

Katina Paxinou's Scene in The Trial

A tidbit from the This is Orson Welles tapes, left out of the book, as Welles and Bogdanovich discuss Katina Paxinou and Welles gets to why her scene in The Trial was deleted: OW: And we must say that [that Paxinou was excellent in Mr Arkadin] because she acts a big scene in The Trial, which I cut o...

Re: Welles at the Movies

You are correct Tony, he was referring to part 1 of Ivan. It is funny, going through the transcripts, how right Welles is when he tells Bogdanovich how asking him about a given director or film on different days will get totally different responses. In one conversation, he talks about how much he lo...

Re: Welles at the Movies

I've been reading the transcripts of the tapes Bogdanovich and Welles made in preparation for This is Orson Welles from the Welles-Kodar papers at U of Michigan, and I got a chuckle out of this bit about Eisenstein, quite different from what eventually appeared in the book: PB: What is Eisenstein to...

I was doing research in the Richard Wilson papers at the U of Michigan today, and came across this Variety article about the Quixote screening in '86:

Re: The 13 Missing Welles/Mercury Radio Programs

I suspect Criterion never put out another Welles radio collection for a similar reason. I'm sure that lack of sales is partly because there's so much free stuff on the Internet. But I know I'll still buy OTR once in awhile if it's outstanding quality, or rare. That's why I don't understand why noon...

Re: OTHELLO 2014 DVD Release?

Jeff, do you remember a 30-minute French documentary we had a link to here some years ago? I can't remember the title, but it seemed to take place largely near the ocean and contained a few snippets of Othello footage that were not in any version of the movie. I'd like to see it again if it's still...

Re: OTHELLO 2014 DVD Release?

Potentially exciting news, but I remain highly skeptical anything truly useful (i.e. other cuts of the film, or FILMING OTHELLO) are going to be included. Hopefully ARKADIN is coming before long as well, given the centenary.

Re: Harvey Chartrand, RIP

Sorry to hear this. Harvey often provided a contrarian viewpoint that was certainly useful in situations where it was often in short supply, given the nature of a board like this.

Re: Orson Welles Radio Almanac

There are several mistakes in that article, but the most interesting thing about it is the claim that Welles continued making the 1944 Almanac show for a further period after the accepted June 1944 end date. There's nothing that I've ever seen indicating this was the case, and they don't seem to hav...

Re: Tim Lucas responds to Wellesnet flaying - Video Watchblog en

Mike, the Perspectives on Orson Welles book is a collection of pieces edited by Beja, the majority of which appeared elsewhere. There's a section of contemporary reviews for several of his films, a couple reprinted interviews (one with Welles, one with Heston on Welles and ToE), and then the bulk of...
