Re: Tim Lucas responds to Wellesnet flaying - Video Watchblog en

I have a copy of the Beja book, and if I could sell it for those prices, I would. It's the usual Amazon/ebay thing of something going out of print, no copies being available, and someone deciding to charge an extortionate price for it. No one will ever pay those prices, so I'm not sure what the end ...

Two Recent Nods to Welles

I've seen and read two recent nods to Welles recently; the first is as a fictional character in novelist (and esteemed film critic) Kim Newman's latest book in his ANNO DRACULA series, which posits a timeline in which Dracula wins at what would have been the end of Stoker's novel and ends up forcing...

Re: Radio Shows

Sadly, I suspect you're right, Jeff, unless as you said they're part of an archive. In addition to the Smithsonian's copy of the FAREWELL TO ARMS broadcast, the University of Michigan's Welles Collection claims to have a copy of THE CHICKEN WAGON FAMILY, but it's on 12-inch acetate disc, and I don'...

Re: OTHELLO 2014 DVD Release?

Yeah, I'm interested to see what comes of this. I have very low expectations, so it won't take much to surprise me.

Re: OTHELLO 2014 DVD Release?

It says that France and the US will get an April release. The autumn bit refers to the film discussed after OTHELLO.

Re: Radio Shows

Some are simply lost, or in rare cases, the only remaining copies are held in archives where copies haven't been made for distribution. "The Chicken Wagon Family" is a lost episode, for example. Old time radio has proliferated for easy download on the internet to the extent that if it isn'...

Re: Father Charles Coughlin and Welles

I live very close to his one time church, the Shrine of the Little Flower. It's a striking building, but I doubt they memorialize Coughlin anywhere. At least I would hope not.

Re: Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth

I'd like to see that script sometime. Too bad that show is apparently lost. Welles' surviving radio career is already an embarrassment of riches, but the "Frenchmen" program is among a fairly long list of important gems still missing, including 13 Campbell Playhouse shows and quite a few ...

Re: Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth

Hayworth was in the Lady Esther sponsored Orson Welles Show, in "There Are Frenchmen and Frenchmen." She played a PE teacher in the school-based comedy, if I'm remembering correctly. I have a summary of the script in my notes somewhere.

Re: TOO MUCH JOHNSON Found!

A more likely explanation (rather than Welles simply lying) comes from a Frank Brady article about Too Much Johnson from 1978: Some thirty years later, a print of Too Much Johnson turned up in Welles's villa outside Madrid. Welles states: "I can't remember whether I had it all along and dug it ...

Re: Mr. Arkadin aspect ratio

As an aside, the Italian DVD (the first one to be released) appears to be the source of the British DVD's transfer, as it has identical cropping. The shorter Italian and French dubbed versions on that Italian disc also use the same cropping.

William Alland piece on MST3K set

While certainly not a reason to buy the set unless you already are into Mystery Science Theater 3000, the most reason box set of films (Vol. 26) includes a bonus feature ("Chasing Rosebud: The Cinematic Life of William Alland") looking at the career of Mercury Theater member William Alland...

Re: ‘My Lunches with Orson" from Henry Jaglom

I suppose it's possible that Jaglom did not provide Biskind with any transcripts concerning Oja. I picked up a copy of the book yesterday and have yet to find her name mentioned. But that might be another good question for the transcriber. Oja is mentioned a couple times in relation to The Dreamers...

Re: Welles radio programs now available for streaming

The scripts are automatically copyrighted as unpublished and unregistered works, under the Copyright Law of 1978, meaning they're protected for 120 years (previously they were protected forever). I didn't mean to give the impression Wellesnet was in any kind of danger; as I said before, almost no on...

Re: Welles radio programs now available for streaming

A small note, but the pedant in me demands it: the recordings of the shows themselves that are posted all over the place may well fall into public domain status, but they do not qualify as being out of copyright, because the scripts used in them remain covered by copyright. Technically, the writers ...
