Re: AFI asks: "Why do you think CITIZEN KANE is the best film ever made?"

Good responses. Significantly, Larry Cohen once mentioned to me that much of VERTIGO'S success was due to Bernard Herrmann especially in providing musical accompaniment to those boring scenes of Scotty stalking Madeline while driving in an Francisco. At the 1979 Athenns, Ohio Film festival, Jerry Fi...

Maybe, Vargas's final line should not be changed to "The President, or the law".

Re: Marty Feldman Comedy Machine / Orson Welles

I do remember seeing that but before Marty and Monty Python came "At Last. The 1948 Show" that featured Marty, Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Cleese and Bill Oddie (later of "The Goodies along with TBT. I think Orson did have an appreciation from British TV comedy at the time. At least one e...

Re: The Stranger

Don't forget Senator Rankin in the late 40s. He is actually metnioned in the restored full text of James Jones's FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. It was among the controversial items removed from the 1951 published edition. LIKE SAME COME RUNNING, that nook also comments indiretly on the period in which it wa...

Re: The Stranger

To follow up on my May 9, posting here is a recent article from THE GUARDIAN UK dealing with the resurgence of anti-semitism and Fascism in post-war Britain. It again shows how perceptive Welles was in reading the "sign of the times" in his own country. https://www.theguardian.com/news/202...

Re: OW & Rita wedding day interview

I was amazed to see Gus Schilling appear as a younger version of Edward Everett Horton type in the Astaire/Rita YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER (1942) moving from the drug store into high society. I wonder if he acted as match-maker for Orson and Rita?

Re: Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic coming to Netflix

If so, this will be a crying shame similar to the disgraceful comment made by Richard Dreyfuss on receiving an Award when he praised Irving Thalberg for interference with von Stroheim's films. Kael's baleful influence extends beyond the grave, another reason, perhaps, for regarding MACBETH as an acc...

Another eloquent and informative presentation. In addition to the wealth of material, the video also shows us his study so those of us also following V.I Warshawki's practices of "Good Housekeeping" can take pleasure in the fact that "we are not alone" I'd like to raise a ...

Re: Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic coming to Netflix

I think there is little likelihood of this happening so alarm bells should not be ringing. Should this travesty appear, then it would be subject to the criticism of well-known figures such as Peter Bogdanovich,Jonathan Rosenbaum, Joseph McBride, wellesnet.com and Robert Carringer whose work will not...

Re: John Ford's "Pilgrimage"

Not at all, Joe. I knew it was one of the two but did not have access to my book collection when I wrote the entry. The 1970s UK British journal FOCUS ON FILM, edited by Allan Eyles, did have a special Ford issue with an interview that he gave (sometimes reluctantly!) before a California college aud...
