Re: War of the Worlds on Criterion.
Yes, Criterion are really falling down in terms of their past reputation. They are now being superceeded by companies such as Eureka with its Masters of Cinema series, Olive, and Kino-Lorber. The forthcoming WAR OF THE WORLDS could have been much better with new features added. Criterion's Dietrich-...

Re: 3-film Welles fest in Denver
For us, these are the "usual suspects" but we also have to remember that not many people have seen them so this is a great opportunity to discover his work and move on to others such as the German documentary ONE MAN BAND that also needs subtitling for the actual commentary over Orson's sc...

Re: R.I.P. Tim Brooke-Taylor
A missing link leading to MONTY PYTHON was AT LAST THE 1948 SHOW (ITV) featuring John Cleese and Marty Feldman. Episodes have been recently recovered and available on one DVD. Another, with that famous choral number, "I've got a ferret sticking up my nose", may soon feature on another DVD....

Re: War of the Worlds on Criterion.
Sadly, without the Gene Barry and Ann Robinson audio-commentary of earlier editions. Although Orson's radio broadcast is there, we have it available here and on youtube. This is another of Criterion's "re-tread" projects and better and new features are needed for their DVD version.i

Re: John Ford's "Pilgrimage"
Yes, Norman Foster it is and Joe McBride wrote a fine section on it in his JOHN FORD book as well as supplying a great DVD audio-commentary.

Re: Herman J. Mankiewicz biopic coming to Netflix
You're lucky that lot have even heard of KANE. None of my students have seen the film now. But, at least, that's a start and some corrective fluid could be directed towards their brains at that watch party!

Re: Treasure Island available on DVD from Warner Archive
The FB site "Talking Pictures" devoted to a cable station that runs classic films has a thread on Verity Lambert employing Orson to shoot a sea narrative then being disappointed with the results. This evoked a particular thought. Orson could have made a great DR. WHO in the 60s. After all,...

Re: Robert Evans, former Paramount head
Thank you for this information, Joe. TARGETS did get released in England and we ran it at (the now sadly extinct) Manchester University Film Society. We were all impressed with it and the information about Sam's contribution makes it all the more distinctive.

I think "Daph" herself appears at the end of the broadcast still teasingly refusing to give the heroine's name!

Re: Graphic novel - Orson Welles: Warrior of the Worlds
Just want to wish you every success on this project. I'm moving on to Wells's WAR, then Orson's broadcast after running the stage performance of Jeff Wayne's musical version. This sounds really good and imaginative. Good luck!

Re: Swiss Family Robinson - 1940
Remember this running on BBC TV in the late 50s when it purchased the rights to the RKO Library that included the first TV screenings of KANE and AMBERSONS. Yoo young then to discern "His Master's Voice" in that film.

Re: 'Brothers Mankiewicz' touches on Citizen Kane
Thanks for this item Ray and your excellent interview. Coincidentally, I watched Joe's ESCAPE (1948) a few days ago. A Fox production based on a John Galsworthy novel with Rex Harrison, Peggy Cummings, and the first two DR. WHOs in separate scenes. In 1974 on the Gravesend to London train I sat next...

Re: Reactions to 'The Other Side of the Wind'
Trust the erudite Joe Dante to make this very relevant comment about the Academy. Back in 2015 when the university film production department ignored Welles's centenary I ran two English department semester classes on Welles foolishly hoping that one of them would end with THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND...

Re: "Marching Song: A Play," written by Welles, edited by Todd Tarbox
Thanks Ray. As i mentioned to Todd Tarbox, my review will contain a comparison with Warner Bros's version of The John Brown Story with Errol and The Gipper uniting North and South on the trail of a crazy Mr. Brown portrayed by Raymond Massey. I remember one scene with a terrified young African-Ameri...
