Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

After watching Mank and RKO 281 i decided to watch Peter Bogdonovich's The Cat's Meow last night and did like it but not sure if the story about Hearst shooting Thomas Ince is true or not. Tonight i will watch the 2001 documentary Captured on Film: The True Story of Marion Davies.

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

One problem i did have watching it was the sound which sounded like a echo chamber. I viewed the movie thru the tv app and was forced to use my tv speakers instead of my soundbar and my tv speakers are not the best. Also at times i could not understand what Gary Oldman was saying so about 20 minutes...

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

Finished watching Mank and i thought it was good. Great cinematography and the acting was fine. It does help if you know your Hollywood history. You do get the impression at the end that Mank did all the work on Citizen Kane which is not the case.

Re: Welles' casting of Tim Holt

I wonder if Tim Holt ever made any comments later in his life about being in Ambersons?

Re: Scorsese talks Herrmann.

There is a great hour long documentary "Music for the Movies: Bernard Herrmann" (1992). I have the dvd but it would have been nice if TCM got the rights to broadcast it.

Re: Citizen Kane 80th anniversary T-Shirt

Looking at the t-shirt they could have used better images of Dorothy Comingore & George Coulouris.

Citizen Kane 80th anniversary T-Shirt

Looks like the celebrations for Kane's 80th Anniversary are staring early with a Citizen Kane 80th anniversary 1941-2021 cast signed T-Shirt you can buy at Amazon. I wonder where they got the signatures?

Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

Very good article by Joseph McBride and i still want to see MANK when it comes out on Netflix. Have the dvd of RKO 281 but's it's been years since i have seen it so i will have to give it another look soon. Do you remember anything of it? Me neither, and why would you want to rewatch an unmemorable...

Re: Arena: The Orson Welles Story

I keep the TNT version for sentimental reasons to remind me of what tv could show instead of the worthless garbage we have today. Back in the 1990's cable channels like TNT, Bravo, and AMC did broadcast alot of nice classic movies and documentaries. TCM does broadcast some documentaries but not that...

Re: Arena: The Orson Welles Story

About 10 years ago i purchased from the UK a dvd disc version of the BBC Arena and it was a recording made from a tv broadcast. Glad i recorded the American TNT broadcast to VHS tape back then and transferred it to disc later so now i have two versions i can watch.

Can't believe it was released almost 15 years ago so i hope next year Criterion will re-release it on Blu-ray with a fresh new transfer along with The Trial.
