Re: MANK - Netflix biopic on Herman Mankiewicz

David Fincher’s new film about the making of “Citizen Kane” could be an Oscar favorite in a year dominated by streaming contenders. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/movies/mank-netflix-best-picture-oscar.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage&section=Movies This is written by o...

Re: MANK, the Netflix biopic

MANK gives short shrift to Orson Welles, both as a character and co-writer of CITIZEN KANE, according to veteran film critic Todd McCarthy “Mank, in which Orson Welles as a character barely appears, https://www.wellesnet.com/mank-todd-mccarthy/ A pity, given that he's played by Tom Burke, an excell...

'I Am Jonathan Scrivener'

Part of the real fascination of Kane for me is that it's one of the few pictures ever made which constructs the portrait of a character. I've always thought that Orson was influenced by a popular novel of the time called “I Am Jonathan Scrivener”. All its characters talk about a man they know. In t...

As of now the Criterion Channel is showing Confidential Report and Mr. Arkadin in the Comprehensive and Corinth versions.
I may never buy another DVD.

Judging from the comments, this is what people will think black and white looked like.

Re: The Happy Prince

I understand where you're coming from, Craig -- and it seems, from the quote you've posted, Wilde as well. I saw something different, more layered. Something, it turns out, that wasn't there. It's still a beautiful, moving tale, told to great effect by Welles, with a particularly great assist from ...

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

In later films, most notably CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, the boy kills his surrogate father figure as his actual father dies and he assumes his father's role. Hal assumes the crown, turning his back on Falstaff--and the old man's face is filled with pride and joy, as well as pain, seeing what he has helped...

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

Thanks so much, Steve. Most of it is so skillfully rendered, it makes the sometimes glaring errors ("Pride of the Ambersons"? An unintentional thanks to Mank?  ) even more noticeable (and at times delightfully humorous). No, machines will not replace us. (At least, not yet. :w...

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

As a complete translation wouldn't be necessary (a summary would probably suffice), if there's no one who is fluently bilingual, perhaps someone who's familiar enough with the language could use an Italian-English dictionary to give an idea of the interview's high points. Here's the link, I think. ...
