Re: Sherman Clark Universal Staff photographer

Very true, Wich2. I suppose it was the shock of seeing him looking so utterly un-Quinlan-like (and recalling the story of Welles rushing to a party, made up as Hank, and being bemused by people telling him how wonderful he looked -- the implication being that he wasn't in costume) that made me uncon...

Re: Sherman Clark Universal Staff photographer

Is that Welles, in the dark jacket and open-collar white shirt, behind the car on the right? It looks like him from 20 years before. If it is . . . what a masterful transformation into Hank Quinlan!

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

Thanks so much, Steve. Most of it is so skillfully rendered, it makes the sometimes glaring errors ("Pride of the Ambersons"? An unintentional thanks to Mank?  ) even more noticeable (and at times delightfully humorous). No, machines will not replace us. (At least, not yet. :wi...

Plato's "Allegory of the cave"

This was new to me, tho I'm sure other Wellesnetters are familiar with it.

Thoughts?

Re: Hunt for lost 'Magnificent Ambersons' footage in Brazil

As a complete translation wouldn't be necessary (a summary would probably suffice), if there's no one who is fluently bilingual, perhaps someone who's familiar enough with the language could use an Italian-English dictionary to give an idea of the interview's high points.

Looks like you have to subscribe to access it. Is there a member who does, and who could summarize it?

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

One book that did come out around the same time as the Leaming was Charles Higham's RISE AND FALL OF AN AMERICAN GENIUS, which devotes a couple pages to Woodard, but gets some facts wrong, like saying Lynwood Shull (Higham calls him "Leonard") was found guilty and served a year in prison ...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

To most people, he was the guy that did CITIZEN KANE, WOTW, and Paul Masson commercials. To be sure. But then, Frank Brady isn't "most people." In a nearly 600-page, otherwise (ostensibly) meticulously researched, soup-to-nuts biography, for him not to even be aware of the singular incide...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

Frank Brady's 600-page "Citizen Welles", which came out around the same time, is a fine book, but it doesn't mention the Woodard case at all, though he does devote ten full pages to Welles's stage production of "Around the World", which happened the same summer. Has anyone ever ...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

Would that Welles were here. From The Hill: "House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the highest-ranking African American in Congress, said Monday that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) 'ought to be ashamed of himself' after penning a controversial op-ed in The New York Times calling for the U.S. mi...

Re: The Affidavit of Isaac Woodard

What would Welles say today, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd -- just the latest in an apparently endless stream of such hideous (and, even worse, all too often unpunished) crimes? What would be the reaction today to his impassioned, uncompromising call for justice?

Re: AFI asks: "Why do you think CITIZEN KANE is the best film ever made?"

Super! Thanks, Wellesnet. I know AFI will get a number of astute entries from Wellesnetters.
