Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

With Ambersons on Blu-ray and The Other Side of the Wind on Netflix in November it will be a great month! On the Blu-ray is the audio commentary by Robert Carringer a port from the laserdisc? By the way nice cover art on the Blu-ray. I agree about the cover art - I like it. I would bet that the Car...

Criterion just announced a November 20th release for Ambersons:

It includes a new 4K digital restoration plus a great set of special features. Very excited. Can't wait!

Re: Criterion release of 'The Magnificent Ambersons'

Fantastic news ... for me, I think this will be my most anticipated release on home video ever! My favorite film by Welles and in my top 3 favorite films made by anyone. I think that it's been poorly treated on home video also plays a big part of it for me. We had to wait until 2011 to get an underw...

Re: Who dragged Touch of Evil across the floor?

Scratches aside, I much prefer the picture quality of the Universal Blu-ray over the Masters of Cinema one (I own both). While the scratches aren't pronounced on the MoC as they are on the Universal, I feel the Universal wins out in almost every other respect PQ-wise. The Universal appears sharper, ...

The region-free Blu-ray from Indicator already exceeds both the TCM and Mill Creek Blu-rays in video and audio.

Re: Ambersons Blu-ray?

Yes, true, Ambersons has been considered (and still is by some) among the greatest films of all time. However, I think that reputation is primarily driven by film critics, historians, and scholars. That's not to say that there aren't regular folks who like or love the film (it's my own personal favo...

Re: Ambersons Blu-ray?

I don't think Ambersons is nearly as high-profile of a movie that would get any sort of anniversary release by WB. That's reserved more for the likes of Kane, Casablanca, Ben-Hur, King Kong, etc. Ambersons is nowhere near as popular as those films. I still feel there's a good chance that it gets rel...

Re: Preliminary Magnificent Ambersons DVD info on amazon.com

This is only speculation, of course, but I think there is quite a reasonable chance that it gets released by Criterion ... hopefully in the not too distant future. As someone on the Bluray.com forum has pointed out, a whole bunch of Warner titles all went OOP around the same time. Of those, the foll...

Re: Ambersons Blu-ray?

Although it may have used the same old print, is this the first time TCM has shown an HD version of the film? Do you mean it's just an upscaled version of the existing standard definition scan for the TCM HD channel or do you think they have done an HD scan of the same old print (without any cleanup...

I also posted in another thread about even bigger news (in my opinion) ... the forthcoming Criterion release of Chimes at Midnight also on August 30th!

Re: TMA Bluray to be released in Japan

While the reviewer does mention some positives about this release, overall, it sounds like a disappointment. I'm curious why he made the following statement in his review: "Actually, we should note that the film will never look pristine, glossy or have significant depth - even if Warner does a ...

Re: TMA Bluray to be released in Japan

I just received it. First impressions- It doesn't look like an upconvert. That said, overall picture doesn't look amazing. Detail is just all right; the image seems too bright (milky blacks) and there's a lot of dirt/film damage. As per reports that the Japanese company releasing the RKO Collection...

Re: New DCP restoration of "Chimes at Midnight"

So if we read between the lines, does that mean that we should not expect a Criterion Blu-ray release in the next year, given the additional restoration work planned?
