Horst Buchholz, who starred as the adventurer Marco Polo in Marco the Magnificent (a 1965 epic in which Welles portrayed a Venetian savant for all of 2 minutes), has died at age 69. Has anyone on this message board seen Marco the Magnificent? What a great cast: Anthony Quinn, frequent Welles co-star Akim Tamiroff, Grégoire Aslan (Bracco in Mr. Arkadin), Omar Sharif, Elsa Martinelli (who appeared with Welles in The Trial and The V.I.P.s), Robert Hossein, Jacques Monod and Bruno Cremer.
Buchholz was a handsome leading man in his prime. They called him the German James Dean. God, everybody was compared to Dean back then. Buchholz's best roles were in The Magnificent Seven, Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three and (more recently) in Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful (although I recall being shocked by his aged appearance in the latter film).
