Wellesnet Charity Auction - Everybody's Shakespeare

Postby DexyMan » Mon Nov 29, 2010 3:22 pm

Hey guys, for Christmas I thought I would put up for auction an original 1934 print of Everybody's Shakespeare: Twelfth Night written by Orson Welles and Roger Hill. The book is in pretty good condition for being so old and is perfectly readable. The front cover has a little circle of water damage and the corners are a bit bent. I'm not sure how to post a photo but if I can, I will.

If anybody buys it, I will give all of the money to Wellesnet to help the site out. I wanted to donate myself, but times are tight! I'm looking for at least 20 bucks but will accept less if I don't get any other offers. The money can either be paypaled to me or Lawrence it doesn't matter to me.

I apologize if this isn't allowed on the message board, if it isn't feel free to delete the thread!

DexyMan: I warn you that Todd Baesen, huddled in that cave with Julian Assange on Isle of Skye behind kegs of Talisker Whisky, may not be able to supply a valid bank draught to you. And if he can, it may put the dogs of Bank of America on your trail. Tell you what, newly bankrupt that I am, I'll bid $25 for the book.

Contact me at Macresarf1@sblglobal.net

Of course, should anyone else wish to bid a higher sum to rescue Baesen and wellesileaks from Colonel Viktor Kleinhaagen's Quarto Negro Flying Squads, I might be prepared to go a bit higher.

Ladies and gentlemen, are you game?

Thank you, DexyMan: As I promised, I'll raise the ante; I'll go $40, but that's my top.

I have sent you a proposal, DexyMan, and wish to commend you, as all Wellsians should, for parting with such a valuable piece of theatrical literature.

Just give me the word.

Glenn

[P.S. -- I've, this moment, received a coded wiregram from Colonel Kleinhaagen. Todd Baesen has been rescued by a Russian destroyer off Scapa Flow. With a hundred thousand wikileaks on the subversive activities of David Thomson in his possession, he is being taken to Murmansk, where he will be offered asylum.]

DexyMan: I wanted you and everyone else to know that I received, in excellent condition, your specially donated copy of the Todd Press Everyman's Edition of TWELFTH NIGHT (copyright, Roger Hill and Orson Welles, 1934), and it exceeded my most ambitious expectations. The volume appears handmade, introduced by Welles, and illustrated by literally hundreds of sketches by him, age 19, at the time. It is certainly a volume to be treasured, and I am surprised that the bidding did not go considerably higher.

Now if we can only rescue Todd Baesen from the Siberian prison where he has been taken, so I can find out how to reach Larry French, my cheque, made out to Wellesnet, shall be placed in French's hands. I guarantee it!

Thank you again, on behalf of all Wellsians, for your generosity.

Great, I'm glad it arrived safely! Yeah, those books are really interesting to look through. I'm not exactly positive on what parts Orson did vs. what parts Roger Hill did but it still is interesting to compare the edits to the full length version. The illustrations are the main thing I return to when I'm just glancing through the book. MacBeth is the most fascinating to me because you can buy Orson Welles on Shakespeare which contains Welles' script for the Voodoo version, you can buy his Everybody's Shakespeare version to see how he would stage it in school and then, of course, you can watch his movie to see how he finally shot it. All three are quite different, which is exactly what one would expect from Welles.

Sounds like the makings of a book, DexyMan!

Thank you again.

Baesen has returned from Siberia and wants me to go with him to a couple of Eddie Muller's Noir City shows at San Francisco's Castro Theater. I'll see that he transmits my cheque to Larry French on one of those occasions, about two weeks from now.

Glenn
