Perhaps Welles would be especially miffed to be eclipsed by Vertigo, since, in My Lunches with Orson p165, we have this exchange concerning Hitchcock:

HJ: "If you think that one [Rear Window] is bad, there's another terrible one with Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak."

Welles: "Vertigo. That's even worse."

He points to Shadow of a Doubt, starring his pal Joseph Cotton, to be "the one good picture Hitchcock made in America."

We discussed on Facebook recently about Welles admitting that his hatred of the Oscars was due to sour grapes. I suspect his resentment of Hitchcock is for a similar reason. But of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, Orson Welles included. IMO, REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO are both great movies. NOTORIOUS, ROPE, NORTH BY NORTHWEST and PSYCHO are even greater.
