Re: The 1989 attempt to colorize 'Citizen Kane'
I attended a Ted Turner speaking engagement set up by the Detroit Adcrafter organization shortly after the announcement that the original contract for Kane prevented it from being colorized (must have been late February or early March, 1989). After the speech, I nearly bumped into Turner as we both left the building heading toward the parking lot. The spirit of Welles took hold of me and I couldn't resist needling Turner about Kane being saved from the colorization process. Turner snarled, "oh, there are plenty of other films I can colorize; I don't need to do that one!" Feeling a little guilty over my snarky comment, I changed the subject and thanked him for his speech (a strange, rambling one that started with him building his cable news empire but devolved into his fear of nuclear annihilation) and wished him a "good day". I watched as Turner walked off alone still muttering to himself about Welles and colorization! I remembered that line that Raymond the butler says when describing Kane ("...he acted funny sometimes...") and thought that this real media mogul may not be that far removed from Welles' fictional one.

How can a grown man claim not to "like" black and white cinematography and not be embarrassed by his own cultural limitations?
