From the Christie's auction of Welles memorabilia comes this trenchant comment on Orson Welles from a letter written by Agnes Moorehead:
"The Magnificent Ambersons" is a well-made film. This was one of Orson Welles' early films and he contributed his genius to the industry which, I'm sorry to say, was not very appreciative. He was the greatest director I've ever known in pictures and it is a pity he has been allowed to remain in Europe instead of working in Hollywood. An artist like Mr. Welles should be kept employed in America - he is needed here.
