Okay, got it today. Definitely an upgrade in picture in sound compared to my former copy. Not state-of-the-art, but very watchable! Worth the $17.99, even for a DVD-R. It will do until a truly restored DVD/Blu-ray is released.

Good find Scotsman. I watched the Italian issue just yesterday -the picture and sound quality is very good. On the downside the extra of the separate soundtrack tracks didn't work properly with the music keeping cutting out. Has anyone else had this problem? Also does anyone know if there has been a separate music CD issue for Chimes ever been released?

Hey everyone,

I've a question regarding the Italian issue of Chimes. I went ahead and ordered what I thought was the same disk from the UK version of Amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004CQH3RQ/ref=oss_product. However, I see that it was released from Cecchi Gori Home Video rather than from Sinister Film. I also noticed that the DVD only comprised 4.17 GB rather than a more normal number of 6-8 GB. Can someone with the Italian release from Sinister confirm whether or not the version I have is the same as the Italian release? Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

It is the same issue. If you look at the back-bottom left in very small print It says Sinister Video distributed by Cecchi..ect.
However it is significently more expensive than ordering direct from amazon.it

Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately I'd already ordered the disc before posting. I see the small print on the back cover which you reference. If you have the disc from amazon.it, could you confirm that the disc contains 4.17 GB when you insert it into a computer? While I can clearly see the quality of my disc surpasses that of the Spanish edition, I just want to confirm it's the authentic Italian edition, not some recompressed knockoff. Again, thanks so much for responding!

It's true. And it's a Region 1 DVD, not a PAL. I posted the details in the trading area of the forums, if you're interested.

Damn! I'd l;ove to get a copy of this but don't have MA to trade. My FALSTAFF copy has indelible Japanese subtitles at the edge of the frame!

While on YouTube today, I stumbled upon this. Nostalgia Family Video have uploaded Chimes at Midnight to YouTube, in full, as a single video (clocking in at just under 1 hour 56 minutes).

What surprised me is the quality of the video and audio. Both are very clean and crisp. As someone who's never seen Chimes, I've been very eager to see it in it's best possible quality, and this appears to be up there!

Can anyone report on the quality of this in comparison to any other releases? Also, after a bit of searching it would appear Nostalgia Family Video were responsible for this DVD-R release of the film. Can anyone confirm this?

The DVD-r release is the exact same print of the film that is uploaded to youtube. They're the company that puts out that particular edition.

It's just a shame that the highest bitrate you can select for either one is 360p; it would be nice to be able to watch them in 480p.

Those are nice prints of both CHIMES and THE TRIAL. Probably the same ones as the Studio Canal series. Chimes looks like about 1.66 aspect ratio, which is probably meant to be stretched out to fill a widescreen TV.

The print of The Trial that they've uploaded is the same as the Studio Canal release, but the Studio Canal print of Chimes looks much better than the one they've uploaded. The 1.66.1 aspect ratio of Chimes is the correct, original aspect ratio--no stretching needed.
