Another great place to get an all-region DVD player is HKflix.com. Check out their hardware section there are two brands that are really good, the Janton and the Malata. They are the only DVDs that I am familiar with that actually project anamorphic PAL dvds in their correct aspect ratio. The two DVDs are based on the same chipset. I have the Malata and have tested it on a variety of world DVDs of all kinds of regions and it has been great. It has exceeded all my expectations.

Can anyone verify if the runtime listed on the Spanish Chimes at Midnight DVD issued by Suevia Films is consistent with the actual runtime of the disc? It appears that the copies for sale on the Internet are listed with a runtime of 105 minutes while Jeff Wilson described his copy as running 112 minutes or so. Is there more than one version floating around out there or are all copies listed with a runtime of 105 while actually running 112?

Hi All-
The Spanish "Chimes" DVD recently arrived (which is FABUOUS). According to the opening title card of the film, it is called "FALSTAFF" with "Chimes at Midnight" smaller and in parenthesis. Is this how ALL the title cards read, or are there variations as in Mr. Arkadin? If not, why is the film never referred to (either in print or on this site) as "Falstaff"?

Though the US release went under the title of Falstaff, the film generally seems to be known under the Chimes title. Not sure why, perhaps it simply sounds better than Falstaff. The UK release went under Chimes, and the Spanish release was the same, albeit in translation. I have a subway sized poster for the film, and it has Falstaff as the title. I think it mentions Chimes in small print just like the title card, though I'd have to look at it again. So to answer your question, I don't know exactly.
First noted by someone on the Criterion forums, there is a listing on dvdfr.com for a DVD of CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, both as a standalone title and as part of five disc set with THE THIRD MAN and THE TRIAL, for release in France on October 3. Having heard what I've heard about the rights battle, I can't believe this is for real, but here is the link:

Re. Region 2, etc: there are zillions of model-specific region-free hacks out there on the Web (www.videohelp.com is a good place), region-free players can be bought for under $50, plus, freeware like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter enables anyone to make region-free backup copies of pretty much any DVD. No one needs to have an issue with region coding...

Hey guys- I got my box set today, it came quicker than I expected. The movie is 110 minutes long sped up by PAL of course. The film looks great so far although I have only checked out a bit, the sound is very good as well. The main problem is that the french subtitles appear to be unremovable... Is it worth it to burn without them or will it be so compressed that it becomes worse than the Spanish version?
The bonus features might be nice if you're French because all bonus stuff is in French w/o subtitles, there is a 28 minute making of doc that I haven't really looked at and a 22 minute interview/clip show with a Shakespeare buff. There is also a 4 minute trailer in French and a pretty complete filmography of Welles and Moreau.
The other disappointment is that the whole set is packaged in one 5 disc cardboard case. I was expecting 3 cases inside one large case.
So can anyone answer my question about burning Chimes and also Immortal Story?
Thanks!
jeffrey
