Hi everyone,
I finally picked up The Immortal Story on DVD, watched about 10 minutes of it, and stopped since the subtitles were distracting me too much. Does anybody know if it is possible to remove the forced subtitles (short of, say, cropping the image so that the subtitles are out of it)?
Immortal Story non-removable subtitles
Try copying the disc with DVDShrink (freeware.) If the subtitles are a seperate data file, you can remove them. If they are burned on the picture, you will not see any languages listed in the subtitle box (all the audio tracks and subtitle tracks are listed under Compression, and you can uncheck any of them that you don't feel like copying.)

Thanks, Hadji. I also picked up the French DVDs of John Cassavetes' "A Child Is Waiting" (which features an excellent performance from Paul Stewart...what an incredible actor) and "Love Streams", so I'm using it to remove the forced subs from those films, and then I'll give "Storia Immortale" a shot.
Immortal Story non-removable subtitles
Unfortunately, you're right. I just checked the DVD out with DVD Shrink and there is no subtitle option for the English version. I wonder if it would be possible to re-assemble the film using the elements on the DVD. I assume that it would be possible to use the Italian print (which does have removable subtitles, if I am not mistaken) with the English soundtrack for most of the film, but since the English film contains material that is not in the other editions, portions of the film would still be subtitled. Still, at least for me, it would be better than having subtitles throughout the film.
Next question: Does anybody know what software can be used to extract and edit the video files from the DVD without a loss in quality?
