:::::::::::::

one producer talking to another:

producer #1: tim roth is good, yes. but torturo has that spit that gathers at the corners of his mouth, and has that funny shaped head.

producer #2: well, he does have the spit, that's a plus. and his head is oddly shaped. hhhmmm, let me think about that.

jaime: didn't think DONNIE BRASCO was such a good film. the book was excellent, and a film at least as well rounded as GODFELAS could have come from it.

Hmm...I hadn't considered the spit...but Roth has that thing of being able to sit as if he has no spine.....ok, Tuturro for Van Stratten, but who will play Raina?

hmmmmm....

oh my, i'm laughing. sitting with no spine vs. the spit in the corners of the mouth and funny shaped head.

roth was excellent in LITTLE ODESSA. excellent movie, heavy laden, depressing stuff, mother dying of brain tumor.

it's got to be an ugly girl to believe she would fall for a guy who can sit with no spine, or kiss a guy with spit on the corners of his mouth.

My vote goes to William H. Macy for Stratten, although Tim Roth is a quality choice too. I can imagine Macy retaining some of that mild, almost dull curiosity, while delving a little deeper to bring a little vulgarity that he's not been able to tap yet. I'd go with Finney or Hopkins as Arkadin, while tab Emily Watson or, maybe a stretch, Christina Ricci for the 'innocent' daughter. Turruro would be great in the Tamiroff role, tho.

finney is a good choice for arkadin, but watch them get the fat guy from CHEERS, norm. they will cast the film with cheap tv actors. torturo would be good as zouk, or o brady, the heroined out accordian player. somehow i can't picture a guy who is an accordian for hire muscian shooting up heroin.

don't know who macy, or ricci are

What happened to the ARKADIN remake?
Is it sitting on a dusty shelf at Blockbuster?

1. Bill Pullman and Rip Torn. It would never get financed, but a guy can dream.
2. I've always thought The Usual Suspects was sort of a remake. The recurring shot of the dock in Usual Suspects I believe was a direct lift from Arkadin.

I searched news articles on this, and the only thing I could find was a short note in Film Comment from March of last year indicating that a remake of Mr. Arkadin was “underway.” I have no idea how far along they are on the project. Considering how poorly the remake of Magnificent Ambersons turned out, I’m not especially anxious to see the latest Welles film remake. It would be nice if they used their resources instead on trying to collect all the many versions and fragments of the original film, and tried to put them together in a way that closely approximates what Welles originally had in mind.

Unfortunately, as we all know, most Welles projects, especially public domain items, aren't attractive enough from a financial standpoint to get the bucks needed to get started.

As for the Arkadin remake, the producer appears to be a guy who produced big name films like Rain Man, Bugsy, and some others, but he hasn't done much of anything worthwhile the last 10 or so years, unless you're a fan of The Banger Sisters or Dragonfly. The screenwriter is/was Joshua Safran, who has written and directed one film, according to the IMDB, which looks like a small indie type thing. No director is attached that I could find. It is a dual American-European production.
