I've been offered this title for trade, apparently it's an Italian documentry on the making of the film, (with only the narration in Italian, like the German OMB) Anyone ever seen it, or even heard of it before?

it's a very bad documentary, looks home made, and it's not really a documentary, it's about 20 minutes of out takes from arkadin, and some radio arkadin. the best part is hearing welles yell at the spaniards, 'SILENCIO!." but if the quality is good it's worth getting for the 20 minutes of unused footage. and if the quality is good i can trade you other hard to find stuff for it.

It looks as though my trade for this has fallen through, a shame as i actually really like Mr Arkadin, has anyone else got a copy as it would be interesting to see unused footage on one of my favourite welles films.

Pooh-
Can you elaborate on your statement that DVD-Rs "Don't last forever"? What kind of problems have you had with them? Does anyone else concur?

It's true that DVD's do not last forever....but neither does anything eles. DVD's have an optimal shelf life of something like 20 years. Under normal conditions, wear and tear and such a DVD will probably last you somewhere in the ballpark of 10 years, easily. VHS on the other hand has a much shorter shelf life. VHS' start to degrade even after as just a few viewings. DVDs are a much better medium for archeiving, but it is by no means the best. Whatever you choose, you are still going to have to continually archeive every 5-10 years just to be safe.

I agree with that;
In a way DvD's are great because you don't loose any quality with time but....
But You will sudently loose it : it's all or nothing
I burn DVD-R's for 8 Month and some of them begin to have little dark spot (i don't know if spot is appropriate) on them. It is more difficult to read them
It works very good with good reader (Mine is Sony)

What you must now is that the life time of your DVD-Rs depend on
* The quality of the dvd (What is the mark, how much did you pay for them)
* The quality of the burner

I've choose to buy low prices dvd-r and i knw that i would burn tham again in few years

those high-tech looking chrome dvds, and cds, are the anti-christ. they look so cool in those thin plastic boxes. people love them. when i first got my cd burner i burned probably 150 of those. my music collection made it from record, and cassette to high-tech looking chrome cds. they lasted about 8 months. they all got those dark spots. dark spots = skip.

i've only had that problem with the chrome cds, and dvds. the rest that have gone bad have been from user malfunction.

in 10 years i'll update this post to let you know how the other stood the test of time.

I enjoyed the Italian documentary, simply because you get glimpses of Welles at work you can't see anywhere else. It doesn't have any context or explanation for what it presents though, which is its primary weakness.

On another Arkadin note, has anyone ever interviewed Robert Arden about his work with Welles? According to the IMDB, he's still alive (albeit getting up there in years), which makes him probably the furthest-back surviving main actor in a Welles film, aside from Ruth Warrick.

why that's just round the corner from where i work! i'm a bit shy tho, perhaps i could wait for him (i'm sure he visits there every day) and i could creep up behind him and say something like, "Perhaps a man like you can't realize what it is to have a conscience and no memory at all." and if he doesn't drop dead from fright, see what he has to say?!

atb,
max!

(only joking btw!)

I'm back, more or less intact, thanks to Jeff.

We are suffering Webmemory loss here. Just a month or so ago, Larry French posted on Wellesnet a very informative interview with Arden, in which he expressed his admiration for Welles and the rare experience he had on the CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT set.

'Blunted by community', (or anyone else that's got a copy) would you be willing to trade or sell a copy of "making Mr Arkadin"?
