Stranger (Roan) - A place to buy?
I discovered that the Roan disc comes up on a director search for Welles at Deep Discount DVD:
http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com
I thought this DVD was out of print, so if this place can get them (Free Shipping, too), then maybe this info is worth it to some on this board.
Let me know if this worked or not.

an 11 disc buster keaton set? my god, that sounds great. does it have a late keaton film, i think it's called THE RAILROADER? it's a short film, and there is a documentary about the making of it. also there is a killer documentary, 3 -hrs, AMERICAN MASTERS KEATON. i have it. it's great. the AMERICAN MASTERS CHAPLIN is tremendous, as is the AMERICAN MASTERS GRIFFITH, also 3-hrs, and the AMERICAN MASTERS SCORSESE. all worthy aditions. AMERICAN MASTERS documentaries are the best.
The thing that looked nice about this site is that not only is the shipping free, but the Cirterion DVDs are the cheapest I've seen them:
Brazil: $42 (Haven't seen it for less than around $50)
Seven Samurai $28
Actually, I doin't think I've encountered a Criterion disc (single) for any less than $30.
Sounds delice.

I appreciate the info, Fredric. THE STRANGER is a movie I've only seen once. It was about 10 years ago, and I found nothing interesting about it at the time. I think I saw the colorized version of it. It was the first movie by Welles I saw, and it certainly didn't inspire me to see anymore of his films. But now that I have seen his other films, maybe I'd like it more - especially if it's in the original black and white. But would you (or anyone else) really recommend it? At best the reviews that I've read about it are luke warm, so I've never really considered trying to buy it. But I've looked for it at video stores in my area, and it's impossible to find. The price is fairly reasonable, and with free shipping I'll ponder the idea. Anyone want to put in a good sales pitch for THE STRANGER?

I don't think The Stranger is a great film, but it has some moments. It would have been more interesting had the footage excised from it remained, and even more so had Agnes Moorehead gotten the part of Wilson, instead of Edward G Robinson. It's Welles showing he could make a bankable film, and as such, it's worth seeing. It's more interesting for what isn't there, than what is, if that makes sense. Welles gives a pretty hammy performance, though.

i recomend THE STRANGER. though it suffers from a few things, being a welles fan there is no way you are not going to enjoy it.
all of welles' films have points of interest reguardless of the struggle to make them. STRANGER is no different. it's eccentric, and has some wonderfull stuff in it.
you ask yourself, 'what could welles do with one hand tied behind his back, and sam speagle breathing down his neck?' that is THE STRANGER. I like it because it's a
dark movie with lots of shadows, fun to watch.
and yes, cbanks, that great comic book ending. welles wrote screenplay with huston, but the ending is his style. there was also a tribute to the stranger ending, in the ending of BATMAN
there is a john candy movie where he's a writer, gets hit on the head and wakes up in his own crappy screenplay. compare wilson's arrival in the stranger with the introduction of the town in the candy movie.

Ernest Nimms who was the head of post production for Ed Muhl at Universal dureing the 50's and "fixed" in 1957 TOE, he was the editor of "The Stranger". I met with him before he died and he said " I thought I could do for "Touch Of Evil for Orson what I did for "The Stranger, but it was not there." It was Nimms that I got most of my sound noted and the orig. memo and long with the shorter 12 memo ont he August screening that Welles sent Nov 7.

cole, if you've seen THE STRANGER in color, i don't think it was Mr. Welles version. i only know it to be in black and white.
i found out that it's easier recording from the movie channels than buying them, anyway.
i bought a copy of the stranger and the trial at a store. then found out later that they were cut versions. i recorded each movie from amercian movie classics, and they are the non-cut versions.
if you want, i'll send you the cut.
i'd rather keep the whole.
if you want to know what's on for each month, do Orson Welles on search, and look through the list of choices until it say current monthly schedule. the hours are different though. if you find a movie you want to record, look your t.v. guide to see when it will be on.
alot to go through just for a movie, huh? that's what i have to do. and i got some movies i thought i would never get.
as for movie reviews of THE STRANGER, i don't know if you noticed or not, but almost all of Mr. Welles's movie reviews come out negative.
and if you are an Orson Fan, buddy, you'd better like it
good luck.

In regards to Nimms createing a mess with TOE that is as fact but he a pretty editor in his day, he just made a wrong turn in 1957.

yeah, i saw those lists at www.imdb.com, very unimpressive. it's quite sad that dregs like nims, vogel, jack arnold, harry keller, and zugsmith were inside looking out, and welles was outside looking in.
i have mentioned it several times here, the book PICTURE gives a very eye opening view of what it took to work in the studio system. basically, you needed to be a company man, and you had to kiss lots of ass.

This is the way the stdio system was and to these daze still is. If you look at any Welles studio picture at the time you will find different talents. It is part of the movie makeing practice. Today in some departments much worse. I sat with Nimms for an entire day and talked. He took the work he could get because he he had a boy in a iron lung, which he told me was the first to ever be in a personal home. He really thought he was Wellres friend and Welles notes to hime shore a strong relationship, I woluld never consider a hack, just a studio yes man,,,,and for reason.
