Stranger (Roan) - A place to buy?
"Yes the books paint his as a step n fetch it sometimes. But his personal revord which he kept ( and he kept them all) tell a different story. When you do reserch on a person and subject a bunch of books and a a few libarys will not tell the complete story."
(Still learning the features of the new board!)
Rick,
The books do paint a picture of Richard Wilson as you described. Sounds like a great subject for a book project

It's really a bit ridiculous that posting here i have to worry about some one's son in an iron lung, and some one's wife being the salt of the earth. those things have no place when discusing some one's artistic output. unless the guy made a film about a kid in an iron lung.
I have 3 family members posing as migrant workers in a labor camp, working for below minimum wage, and resent Mr. Schmidlin slighting minimum wage workers.
Joel Stein.

I do not oppose min. wage workers as I was once one myself. In regard to that, I care about all humanity all people being treated fairand just. I was writeing about the deposal of union projectionests by the theaters of today and replaceing them with a under trained worker that cannot change a reel or a lens. My personal hero next to Welles is Woody Guthrie and for all he stood for. In regard to the persoanl life of Welles workers I haveprovided you rare insight in what has not been writen before. If my meaning is to be twisted I think I might just consider not posting here anymore! Jeff has done a great job here. But to think i don't care about the importent issues low wage workers like posted about is a insult to every thing I believe in and care about. Heck I produced the reeit of Greed for free and for the hours i put into TOE was paid much less then min.. The union workers in theaters accross the nation got paid for there jobs and supported family's. Now they are put out to pasture and the one that are hired to replace have no hope for advancement or future and the fat cat who owns the cineplex is pocketing the green. I sorry I offened you , but now you have offened me!

Okay folks, let's all cool out! Let us agree that Jaime's imaginary scene about Richard Wilson was not meant maliciously, but may be taken in the wrong way. Clearly Wilson (no relation) was not a bad guy and helped Welles out a lot. Welles certainly would have benefited from having him around longer. The guy needed to do his own thing. Anyone in his position might be regarded as a lackey of sorts, and I can see why Wilson needed to break free.
I don't want people to feel that they have to tiptoe around anything, but everyone please take into consideration that others might be offended by something you write. Add smileys if need to be to show you are joking, whatever, let's not devolve into bickering over something so silly, okay? I think this is all largely misunderstanding and confusion, and much ado about nothing. I prefer a laissez faire attitude in moderating this board, and would prefer to keep it that way.
As for megaplex projectionists, Rick is right that the situation can be pretty awful depending where you go. Between untrained teens showing the movies and screening them at less than full brightness levels to save a penny on the electric bill, it's often better to just see a film at home. Here in Detroit, we have the Detroit Film Theater, which purports to present films in the best possible manner as its director loves to state in the press. Yet last season, four of the five films I went to see there had serious projection problems of some kind. What can you do? Complaining only gets you so far, and most audiences just don't care.
It's late and that was rambling around willy-nilly, so I apologize if it doesn't make much sense. If you feel you have been slighted, please contact either the individual by the personal messenger on this board and try to work it out, or contact me.

Jack Arnold should not be maligned, either.
So what if he made a few lousy pictures? Who hasn't? Arnold directed Welles in the excellent Man in the Shadow (a modern western in which Welles plays a very ambiguous character -- a 'villain' who doesn't see himself as a villain). Arnold also directed the greatest of Universal-International's science fiction/monster movies of the 1950s, the foremost one being The Incredible Shrinking Man. (Welles narrated the promotional trailer for that classic B-movie during his Hollywood stopover.)
And Rick Schmidlin, please don't give up the Welles ship because of a few snide comments. Although I would advise that you use your spellchecker more.

Jeff, you're looking just like that anti-Welles scoundrel Norman Lloyd!
The Roan Group's STRANGER is definitely the one to get, although it's pretty strange that it should be released as part of a Loretta Young package instead of an O.W. package. CAUSE FOR ALARM, the other flick, is an OK little noir, and features Georgia Backus in a small role as the lady next door, sounding like something out of the Mercury Theatre, which she was a member of for awhile (who could forget her cameo in CITIZEN KANE as the androgynous curator of the Thatcher library).
I've already mentioned on this board the possibility of restoring the original version of AMBERSONS using stills and text from the continuity cut, along with Bernard Hermann's original music. I think it could be effective in a way similar to Rick's fabulous GREED restoration for TCM. However, THE STRANGER is another Welles film that could also be restored in much the same way. After all, Welles' original cut ran nearly 20 minutes longer then the version we know today. Bret Wood wrote a great article in Video Watchdog a few years ago detailing the changes.

how am i supposed to know who i can talk about without injuring you? i'm not a TV psychic.
you post a list of who you don't want critiqued, i'll post a list of who i don't want critiqued, and any one who has some one they are sensitive about can compose their own list, then we can all be proper.

how do i make a fucking happy face for when it's humor? and do we have a crappy face for when it's not?

There are some great people like Chris who I know and respect from New Zealand and Lee Gordon a all around good guy. And Harvey seems pretty cool too, even if I don't know him. These people are well devoted fan to Welles. The Wellesnet group is well meaning also and you work also Jeff. But serious film discusion mixed with childs play is not my taste. So I must say that this is my last post and I will not be back. I don't know if you will bother to keep this on the thread. I have better things to do and I thought what I could add was to help by bringing Welles fan's a insiders point of view but that is not to be any more. So when you here about the next Welles project that I will be producing you will have to read about in the press.

Rick, I'm sorry you feel that way, but do what you feel is right. We'll miss your contributions. I don't think any serious offense was meant by anyone, and no board can be dead serious all the time. I'm locking this thread now, as it's gone nowhere but downhill fast. If someone wants to discuss the Roan Stranger disc any further, feel free to start another thread.
