Re: Lady From Shanghai
Thanks. Hey its interesting at least and the main reason I bring it into light again is based on the "Black Magic" movie. He clearly has many a masonic pins on his shirt and raises the question for me. Although he is one of my greatest idols, in actuality no one can prove it now.

Re: Lady From Shanghai
The Washington Post’s John Kelly had an interesting anecdote in Sunday’s paper on the fire that engulfed a print of The Lady From Shanghai midway through a 1975 screening at the American Film Institute:
“Rick [Raskin] was witness to an infamous incident in District projectionist circles: the nitrate film fire of 1975. He and another film slinger were in the booth at the American Film Institute when it was located in the Kennedy Center. They were preparing to show a poor-quality print of ‘The Lady From Shanghai.’
“ ‘It was really, really messed up,’ Rick said of the brittle film. ‘I remember the other guy saying, “If we get through this show we’re going to be lucky.” We didn’t.’
“Halfway through a reel, the film broke and froze in the projector gate. The intense heat from the lamp ignited it. Fire rushed vertically, engulfing the film still spooled on the reel.
“ ‘When I saw the flames, everything turned to slow motion,’ Rick said.
“Nitrocellulose film burns with an intense yellow flame and noxious fumes. The projectionists fled the booth and the theater was evacuated. No one was injured, but 10 minutes of the Orson Welles classic were reduced to ash.”

Re: Lady From Shanghai
The French-based Carlotta tweeted several vintage publicity photos on March 4 with a tantalizing message. "In the Columbia archives, looking for beautiful rare and unpublished photos of Orson Welles' The Lady of Shanghai ... for a future upcoming release on DVD/Blu-ray edition, 4k restoration."

Re: Lady From Shanghai
I have both TCM & Mill Creek blu-rays so to have a third one is going to be based on how good this new one will be. Kinda sad that Lady and The Stranger have been released a few times on Blu-ray but not The Magnificent Ambersons.
Re: Lady From Shanghai
Someone needs to fund a new sound mix with a new score for "Lady for Shanghai." Welles is on record with his objections to the current soundtrack. Seems a relatively easy thing to fix if those in authority were so inclined.

The region-free Blu-ray from Indicator already exceeds both the TCM and Mill Creek Blu-rays in video and audio.

I suspect the original audio stems no longer exist, only the finalized mix. To remove (and replace) the score, the music would need to be electronically separated from the dialogue and sound effects which would require some time if it could be done successfully at all, especially since the released version employs almost "wall-to-wall" music cues (this slathering of music goes against Welles' usual approach and is one of the things he resented).

Re: Lady From Shanghai
What would be nice would be to at least know what George Antheil music was used for Welles's original preview version. I wonder if that info exists in an archive somewhere.
I'm pretty happy with the Mill Creek LFS, so I never ordered the Indicator, even though it is tempting. The Indicator is available through Amazon UK, though, for those interested:

It'll be interesting to see what Carlotta comes up with.

Re: Lady From Shanghai
Orson Welles' 1948 thriller THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI has been added to the National Film Registry, which previously cited CITIZEN KANE, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and TOUCH OF EVIL.

This coming Sunday morning TCM will broadcast The Lady from Shanghai and will be interesting to hear Eddie Muller's take on it.

Re: Lady From Shanghai
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is conducting a poll for their next Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection volume 2 and on this list of possible films is The Lady From Shanghai. It would be nice to see the film in 4K and there are a lot of good films to pick from.
