I've seen this posted on a few web sites. Don't know if this will be a remake of the Welles movie, but the title suggests it might be. Can't see Nicole Kidman playing Rita Hayworth's character if that's the plan. Here's one of the web sites with a small blurb on the topic:

Cole: My guess is that this proposed film is not a real remake. The article emphasizes that The Lady from Shanghai is a "working title."

Nicole Kidman is a throwback to the Stars of old. She's a worker. A random glance at IMBd movie gossip or the trades on any day will probably reveal a rumor of some new project she is considering. At present she has six unreleased films, either completed, in production or in pre-production. The latest, a once postponed epic on the life of Alexander the Great, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, is now scheduled for 2006. (She is to play the conqueror's mom, Olympias.)

She has something of Rita Hayworth's charisma and aura. And she has shown herself to be an actress. I think she could do the job, but I would think that the picture, if made, would be much different than Welles' version.

False alarm. Apparently Wong Kar-Wai knows better than to try and remake a Welles film. This was in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph (UK):
Wong is reticent about the new project, revealing only that it is "a thriller" that is "definitely not a remake of the Orson Welles film of the same name - that is a masterpiece, and there is no reason to touch it."
Good work, cole. I could not believe that a Chinese-based director would tell the story from a New York/Mexico/San Francisco viewpoint.

But it might be interesting if he did.
