Cloutier mentions that the project almost ruined his health seeing the drastic change from the 33-year-old, relatively slim young man of the project’s beginning into an old man at the end who had ate and drank too much. “He paid dearly for that ultimate effort.”
That's a very good point, eloquently made by Cloutier on the Bluray set. The heroic effort needed to complete OTHELLO seems to have taken a lot out of Welles, but the film itself deserves to be seen as one of the great monuments of independent filmmaking. It's nice to see it given such beautiful treatment by Criterion. Good article, Tony.
