Not having seen "Journey Into Fear" and "Making Othello," I omit them here.

Films that OW completed and released as he wished should go on top, with one exception.

1. Chimes at Midnight (the greatest and OW's favorite)
2. Citizen Kane (of course)
3. F for Fake (an underrated gem)
4. The Trial (depressing but great)
5. Othello (fragmented but still all OW)
-- The Immortal Story*

TIS is my exception. I don't like it. Saw it in the roughly 60-minute version on TCM; maybe the 47-minute cut is better.

So let's start from 6 with the "less-than-100%-Orson" movies.

6. The Magnificent Ambersons
7. Mr. Arkadin (Comprehensive Version)
8. Touch of Evil (Murch version)
9. The Stranger
10. The Lady from Shanghai

I put MA on top of these, despite MA's mangling, because even the one we have is a downright gorgeous and tender movie.

Arkadin over TOE because the Comprehensive Version on Criterion is special - the tone, music, pace, atmosphere, and zaniness strike a nerve in me as a filmmaker. Whereas TOE is a little less entertaining (despite devastating scenes).

Stranger over TLFS because TLFS, frankly, is a mess, while Stranger has that curious dark, bitter feeling. Also because the small town is well-evoked - especially those scenes with Billy House.

Macbeth and TIS fall beneath the top ten, as 11 and 12, respectively.

What about Don Quiote, The Other Side of the Wind, The Deep, The Magic Show, The Dreamers, The Big Brass Ring, etc.? Friends, we've never seen them - just fragments (or nothing at all). Maybe these can go provisionally in a special category: best concept for a movie, not completed? (We'd have to omit TOSOTW as a work-currently-in-progress.)

The Wellesnet messageboard thread, Favorite Welles Films – lay it down is where Wellesnet readers should post your own ten favorite Welles films. And since there are already about 20 ten best Welles film lists, anyone who wants to change their choices can do so be using the edit function. However, once we reach a total of 100 choices, we will compile the totals with whatever you have currently listed. Also, to ensure a uniform count I will only be counting lists with at least ten selections. Titles, however can be from any of Welles works, finished or unfinished, television, documentary or otherwise, but must contain at least ten titles.

Is this list still a going concern? Perhaps a tally can be made after 50 entries - I believe there's something like 45 thus far...

Ambersons
Chimes at Midnight
TOE
It's All True

Arkadin is hard to watch. For me, it's like a train wreck from which I can't turn away.

I'll play...

1. Citizen Kane
2. Magnificent Ambersons
3. Touch of Evil (I'll admit to still preferring the Preview version, but I'm getting a kick out of the novelty of seeing it in widescreen, and fascinated by the suggestion that 1.66 might be an interesting compromise...)
4. Chimes at Midnight
5. Lady from Shanghai
6. The Trial
7. F for Fake
8. Othello (Un-restored version — but haven't seen it for years)
9. Mr. Arkadin (Comprehensive version, but I prefer the credits at the opening, as in the Corinth)
10. Macbeth (Haven't seen the long version)
11. The Stranger

Haven't seen Immortal Story...
